“Cassano criticizes Baldini: Italy is ashamed of youth friendlies.”

Antonio Cassano, former forward for the Italian national team, did not hold back in his criticism of interim coach Silvio Baldini’s squad selection for the friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece, scheduled for June. The ex-international launched a fierce attack, stating that Italy is experiencing “yet another huge embarrassment on a global level.”

With Baldini, who has been temporarily promoted from the under-21 team, leading the senior squad, the selection has left many questioning the adopted strategy. Of the 24 players called up, 19 will make their absolute debut, a risky bet that Cassano deems a disaster. Only goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Donnarumma brings any experience to the squad.

In a blunt statement to the podcast Viva El Football, via MediaGoal, Cassano fired: “We have no coach, we have no president at FIGC, we are one of the most prestigious national teams in the world, and yet we are going to play friendly matches with kids.” The former forward emphasized how damaging this situation is for Italy’s reputation in international football.

This episode follows a dark period for the Italian national team, which has failed to qualify for the World Cup for three consecutive editions, with its last appearance dating back to 2014. Baldini’s call-up, far from reassuring fans, has heightened the sense of crisis and disorientation at a crucial moment for the future of transalpine football. The pressure on the Italian Football Federation is increasing, with Cassano being the voice of many who demand urgent changes and a clear vision for the national team.
