Felix Auger-Aliassime reaches historic milestone in live ATP ranking as Novak Djokovic faces dramatic drop
The world of tennis is in turmoil with the latest movements in the ATP ranking at the start of the 2025 French Open. Felix Auger-Aliassime, the young Canadian star, surprises by reaching a new level in his career, climbing two positions in the live ranking, while the legendary Novak Djokovic faces an unexpected drop that could shake his status among the best.
Felix Auger-Aliassime’s early exit from last year’s Roland Garros, where he lost in the first round to Italian Matteo Arnaldi, left him with only 10 points earned in this clay-court Grand Slam. However, the ATP’s points system, which counts the best 18 results over a rolling 52-week period (19 if the player participates in the ATP Finals), now offers the Canadian a valuable opportunity to shine.
In practice, players accumulate points for each round reached in tournaments, which expire 12 months later in the same competition, allowing for new points to be earned. Felix started the Paris tournament in 6th place in the official ATP ranking, but thanks to a significant loss of points by his direct rivals – Novak Djokovic (4th) and Ben Shelton (5th) – he moved directly to 4th place, a new career high.
Official ATP Ranking as of the start of the 2025 French Open:
1. Jannik Sinner – 14,750 points
2. Carlos Alcaraz – 11,960 points
3. Alexander Zverev – 5,705 points
4. Novak Djokovic – 4,460 points
5. Ben Shelton – 4,070 points
6. Felix Auger-Aliassime – 4,050 points
7. Alex de Minaur – 3,855 points
8. Daniil Medvedev – 3,760 points
9. Taylor Fritz – 3,720 points
10. Alexander Bublik – 3,320 points
Felix, who begins his campaign in Paris against German Daniel Altmaier, is just a few points behind Shelton and de Minaur in the live ranking, meaning a strong performance could secure his place among the top four in the world. However, to reach the 3rd spot, the Canadian will need not only to win the tournament but also to rely on an early exit for Zverev, who currently holds the 3rd position.
The biggest disappointment in the top ten is undoubtedly Novak Djokovic. The Serbian phenomenon, with 24 Grand Slam titles to his name, has dropped five places to 9th in the live ranking due to the loss of 750 points earned in last year’s semifinal. Although he has already secured his place in the second round against Valentin Royer, Djokovic faces a tough challenge to regain ground, needing to win the tournament to have any hope of returning to 3rd place and to reach at least the semifinals to maintain his position in the top 4.
Current ATP ranking as of May 26, 2025:
1. Jannik Sinner – 13,460 points
2. Carlos Alcaraz – 9,960 points
3. Alexander Zverev – 5,355 points
4. Felix Auger-Aliassime – 4,050 points (+2)
5. Ben Shelton – 3,920 points
6. Alex de Minaur – 3,855 points (+1)
7. Daniil Medvedev – 3,760 points (+1)
8. Taylor Fritz – 3,720 points (+1)
9. Novak Djokovic – 3,710 points (-5)
10. Alexander Bublik – 2,930 points
Taylor Fritz, who has moved up one position, has already been eliminated from the tournament, which is likely to cause him to drop again in the rankings. At the top, the lead remains strong with Jannik Sinner maintaining a comfortable advantage of 3,500 points over Carlos Alcaraz, who, despite being the defending champion, is out of the tournament due to a wrist injury, thus remaining at 9,960 points. Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, is too far behind to surpass the Spaniard, even with the possibility of winning the tournament.
This scenario creates an explosive dynamic at the 2025 French Open, where Felix Auger-Aliassime could finally cement his position among the giants of tennis, while Novak Djokovic fights to avoid an even more dramatic drop in the rankings at a critical moment in his career. The season is heating up and surprises continue to unfold – stay tuned!
