José Mourinho is returning to Real Madrid – and this time it’s for good! The bombshell was dropped on Monday by transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano: a deal has been struck between the “Special One” and the Merengues for a two-year contract. The Portuguese coach’s return to the Casa Blanca promises to shake up Spanish and world football.
The official announcement is set to be made soon, with a ceremony planned for next week, right after Real Madrid’s last game in La Liga against Athletic Bilbao this Saturday night. The Madrid club is taking advantage of a clause in Mourinho’s contract with Benfica, which allows either party to terminate the agreement up to ten days after the end of the Portuguese League, with a compensation fee of around three million euros.
In exclusive statements, Mourinho was clear: “I will use this period to reflect on my future.” The coach also confirmed that he has a renewal proposal in hand from Benfica, but the situation in Madrid seems irresistible. Rui Costa, president of Benfica, is set to speak to the members this week to clarify the situation once and for all.
This possible farewell brings an end to Mourinho’s second spell at Benfica. The coach returned to Lisbon in September, replacing Bruno Lage after a start to the 2020/21 season that saw 11 matches. Under the command of the “Special One,” Benfica recorded 27 wins in 45 matches, finishing the league in third place and failing to qualify for the Champions League. Additionally, the club was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal, in the semi-finals of the Taça da Liga, and in the Champions League playoff precisely against… Real Madrid.
The challenge that Mourinho will face upon returning to the Santiago Bernabéu is colossal. Last season was a disaster for the Merengues: they finished second in the Spanish championship, lost the Super Cup, and were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey and the quarter-finals of the Champions League. To make matters worse, the locker room was in constant conflict. The season began with Xabi Alonso as head coach but ended with Álvaro Arbeloa as interim manager, a clear sign of instability.
Mourinho’s arrival could be the spark that Real Madrid needs to regain dominance in Spain and Europe. The Portuguese, known for his strong personality and crisis management skills, now has the task of rebuilding a team that experienced a season marked by chaos. The return of the “Special One” promises to be one of the most explosive moments in European football in the near future.
Get ready for a new Merengue era – with Mourinho at the helm, the storm is guaranteed!
