Jannik Sinner makes history in world tennis: wins the Italian Open and joins an exclusive club with Novak Djokovic

On Sunday, tennis witnessed an epic moment that will be etched in the memories of Italian fans and the sport in general. Jannik Sinner, the young Italian star aged 24, claimed the title at the Italian Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP Masters 1000 circuit, and achieved an extraordinary feat: he became the second man in history to complete the Career Golden Slam, a milestone that only Novak Djokovic had accomplished until now.

Sinner’s dominance in the Masters 1000 is simply impressive. The world number 1 is on a staggering run, with six consecutive titles at this level since the Paris Masters last November. In 2024, the Italian phenomenon has already won Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid, marking a dominant presence in the clay-court season. The victory in Madrid was historic not only for the title but because Sinner surpassed Djokovic by winning five consecutive Masters tournaments—a record that the Serbian had achieved in 2011 and 2014-15, although not consecutively.

At the Foro Italico, in front of his passionate fans in Rome, Sinner confirmed his status by defeating Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in the final, claiming his 10th Masters title. This victory solidifies his privileged position: five of his titles have come just this year, adding to previous wins such as the Paris Masters (2023) and other top tournaments. Additionally, Sinner set a new record by achieving 32 consecutive victories in ATP 1000 tournaments, surpassing the mark previously held by Djokovic.

When asked about the significance of completing the Career Golden Slam on Italian soil, Sinner appeared emotional: “There is no better place to achieve this feat. This tournament has always been special to me, since my debut in 2019 on this very court. I feel a very strong energy and emotion here. For an Italian, this is one of the most important stages in tennis. Winning here, at least once in my career, means a lot to me.”

Sinner not only broke the age record for achieving the Career Golden Slam — at just 24 years old, much younger than Djokovic, who was 31 when he accomplished the feat in 2018 — but he is now on an incredible streak of 34 consecutive wins. The Italian’s performance places him in a unique position to challenge historic records and, who knows, become the first man to win all nine Masters 1000 in a single year.

Novak Djokovic himself, acknowledging the magnitude of the young talent’s achievement, left a direct and respectful message on social media: “Welcome to the exclusive club, Jannik” — a symbolic invitation to a club reserved for legends of world tennis.

With this winning streak and the absolute dominance he is displaying, Jannik Sinner promises to be an undeniable name in tennis for the coming years. Are we witnessing the new king of the Masters? If he continues at this unstoppable pace, there is no doubt that the Italian could indeed write a new golden chapter in the history of world tennis.
