In the heart of the Foro Italico, the venue for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, an unexpected and hilarious moment caught one of the biggest talents in world tennis by surprise: Jannik Sinner. The young Italian prodigy, known for his cool demeanor on court, had a viral reaction that is taking social media by storm – and it wasn’t due to a smash or an epic victory, but rather an aerial scare that nearly left him breathless.

The incident occurred while Sinner was walking through the tournament facilities in Rome, when one of the thunderous flyovers by the Frecce Tricolori – the famous aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force – made him jump in shock, placing his hand on his chest in a gesture of pure panic. The situation, captured on video and widely shared, shows the tennis player clearly startled by the deafening noise of the low-flying jets, so close to the stadium due to the flight paths over the Italian capital.

Despite the scare, Sinner quickly composed himself, flashing a smile and even laughing off the incident before preparing to face Alexei Popyrin. In relaxed comments to Tennis Channel, the player confessed: “I was really surprised because when you’re not outside, you only hear the noise, and it’s a very loud noise, you know? Those jets are really noisy. I was a bit scared because I wasn’t expecting it.”

The Italian further explained that the planes were conducting training for a show that would take place the following day, complete with the colors of the Italian flag painted in the sky. “They told me they were practicing for tomorrow. I thought they were flying too low, but it turned out it was just practice. It’s going to be beautiful tomorrow,” commented Sinner, who did not hide the intensity of the moment. “That moment… I wanted to die. To tell the truth, I was really scared. I said, ‘Minchia, never again!’”

For those who don’t know, the Frecce Tricolori are Italy’s prestigious aerobatic team, established in 1961, which keeps alive an aerial display tradition that began in 1929. Their MB-339PAN, training aircraft modified for shows with colored smoke, have become a hallmark at Italian events – but this time they led to an unforgettable moment in tennis.

On the court, Sinner did not let this incident affect his performance. He continued his impressive streak by defeating Popyrin with a commanding 6-2, 6-0, maintaining his perfect record of 25 consecutive victories in Masters 1000 events this season, equaling Novak Djokovic.

This was not an isolated case. Last year, other stars like Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva were also caught off guard by the flyovers of the Frecce Tricolori, providing moments of relaxation and even humor among the players. Gauff, famous for her expressive reactions, did not hide her surprise and even joked about being celebrated in the middle of the match.

Even players like Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur had to deal with these unexpected interruptions, which, despite being brief, added an extra touch of excitement and challenge to the competition.

With the Frecce Tricolori returning for another display today, the question remains: are the tennis players prepared for more surprises, or have they learned to cope with the aerial spectacle that accompanies the prestigious Roman tournament? If Sinner’s reaction is any indication, we can expect strong emotions both on and off the court.

Stay tuned: the next flyover could be as impactful as the best points of the tournament – and surely, there will be no shortage of reactions to make history!
