In the decisive stage of the WTA Rome Open round of 16, the favorites demonstrated absolute dominance, with overwhelming victories that made it clear who rules this competition. Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula shone with “bagel” wins, confirming a tactical and technical superiority that left their opponents with no chances. Naomi Osaka and Elena Rybakina also secured their passage with straight-set victories, in a round marked by impressive serving intensity and strong pressure on returns.

The biggest surprise came from young Czech player Nikola Bartůňková, who stunned Madison Keys in a balanced duel that was decided only in the final set, making it clear that the next generation is ready to challenge the established stars of the circuit.

Anastasia Potapova, with an aggressive and consistent return strategy, dispatched Liudmila Samsonova with a score of 6-3, 6-2, demonstrating that pressure on the opponent’s serve is her lethal weapon. The tactic of moving forward on the return and reducing long points completely unsettled Samsonova, who struggled to find stability on her second serve.

In the most emotional duel, Bartůňková defeated Madison Keys 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, in a match decided in key moments. Although Keys showed slight superiority in serving statistics, the young Czech displayed greater effectiveness in decisive points, breaking at the moment the American was serving to stay in the match. This victory marks the talented player’s first appearance in the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event and is expected to propel her into the top 65 of the world rankings.

Elina Svitolina gave no chances to Hailey Baptiste, winning 6-1, 6-2 in a display of absolute control. The Ukrainian dominated her serve, winning 75% of points on her first serve and 76% on her second, while Baptiste failed to convert any of her five break-point opportunities, sealing the result.

Naomi Osaka, who has been regaining her best tennis, defeated Diana Shnaider 6-1, 6-2, thanks to a blistering start with her returns. The Japanese player won 12 of the first 13 points, securing a comfortable lead that she never relinquished, dominating the match from start to finish.

Jessica Pegula delivered a completely dominant performance against Rebeka Masarova, winning 6-0, 6-0. The American faced no break points and completely neutralized her opponent’s serve with impressive return depth, finishing the match in just over an hour.

Elena Rybakina, in turn, confirmed her favoritism by beating Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-3, sustaining her game with an effective first serve (62%, winning 73% of the points). Rybakina was lethal in converting her break-point opportunities, capitalizing on four of seven, which ensured her continued participation in the tournament, where she will face Karolína Plíšková.

Finally, Iga Swiatek left no chances for Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, crushing her 6-1, 6-0 in an almost perfect display. The key moment of the match was a series of nine consecutive games in which the Polish player took total control, particularly exploiting her opponent’s backhand. With a conversion efficiency of five out of seven break points, Swiatek advances to the quarter-finals of the Rome Open with energy saved for the challenges ahead.

This Rome Open is shaping up to be a festival of big stars dominating with an iron fist, but also a stage where young talents are starting to make their mark. The next phase promises exciting matchups, with names like Swiatek, Pegula, Osaka, and Rybakina ready to battle for glory. Get ready for an intense, skillful, and surprising tournament finale.
