Ben Shelton faces personal storm and wants to turn pain into fuel to shine at the Italian Open

Recently, young American tennis player Ben Shelton has been going through one of the most difficult moments of his life. The loss of his beloved grandmother, Regina Ann Shelton, who passed away at the age of 90 on March 27 after a long battle, deeply affected the 23-year-old player. However, instead of retreating with his family, Shelton chose to continue competing and fighting on the courts, seeking to transform his pain into determination.

Following his family loss, the tennis player did not give up. On the contrary, he won the doubles title in Houston alongside Andres Andrade and shortly after, shone by winning the singles title in Munich. This gesture not only demonstrates Shelton’s mental strength but also his desire to honor his grandmother’s memory through his dedication to tennis, especially at a time when he is preparing to face one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season: the Italian Open.

Despite being eliminated early in the previous tournament, the Madrid Masters, in a tight match against Dino Prizmic (4-6, 7-6, 6-7), Shelton remains optimistic and sees it as a starting point for improvement. “I didn’t play badly and, for me, it’s something to keep improving. Moreover, it was very important to be able to return to the United States to be with my family, attend my grandmother’s funeral, and support my father. From now on, I hope to honor her memory with everything I do here,” the tennis player revealed.

This new phase of Shelton’s career seems to be taking shape, especially regarding his performance on clay, a surface he has been conquering with increasing confidence. The young American believes that his serve and shots are stronger than ever. “I have big ambitions on clay. It’s becoming one of my favorite surfaces. In Munich, I felt I had excellent ball control. I’m hitting very well from both sides, especially my backhand, which is probably my best shot from the baseline. Additionally, I served well and managed to make good returns, which are the most important parts of the game. I feel very comfortable playing on clay,” he added.

The Italian Open will mark Shelton’s fourth participation in the tournament, where, so far, his record is modest: one win and three losses, including an elimination in the first round last year against Jaume Munar. With his current form, the American is determined to turn this trend around and advance further in the competition.

His campaign this season on clay has been impressive, with a record of six wins and only two losses, poised to surpass last year’s performance (seven wins and five losses). This improvement has been reflected in his rise in the ATP ranking: he started the clay season in eighth place and is now in sixth position, with strong chances of breaking into the top 5 during the Italian Open.

However, Shelton’s journey may be hindered by the draw, which could see him face his biggest rival: the Italian Jannik Sinner. With his first-round opponent still to be decided from the match between Nikoloz Basilashvili and Daniel Merida, Shelton could face a tough test in the quarter-finals against Sinner, against whom he has a significantly imbalanced record. Out of the 10 encounters between them, the Italian has won nine, including the most recent victory in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this year. The only win for the American came at the Shanghai Masters in 2023.

Will this be the moment for Ben Shelton to break his losing streak against Sinner? The young tennis player will need to show colossal determination to maintain his excellent form on clay and advance through the decisive stages in Rome. The question that remains is: can Shelton turn personal pain into enough motivation to shine and surprise at the Italian Open, or will he be defeated early as he was in the previous edition? Tennis fans and experts are watching closely and eagerly awaiting answers.
