Daniel Farke expresses solidarity with Liam Rosenior following shocking Chelsea dismissal days before FA Cup semi-final
Daniel Farke, manager of Leeds United, did not hide his empathy for Liam Rosenior, the former Chelsea coach, who was sacked in a surprising decision by the Blues’ management just days before both were set to meet at the legendary Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final. Rosenior lost his position after a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Brighton, marking Chelsea’s fifth consecutive loss in the Premier League without scoring a goal – a record that matches one of the worst moments in the century-long history of the London club.
With Rosenior’s departure, Calum McFarlane takes over as interim manager in a desperate attempt to reverse the crisis that has plunged Chelsea into one of its worst periods in the last 114 years. This will be his second stint in the interim role in just four months, facing an almost impossible mission to lead the team to the FA Cup final, just 90 minutes away from securing a trophy that the team so desperately needs.
Farke, whose team had not reached this stage of the competition since 1987, did not hide his admiration for the now-eliminated opponent. “I feel solidarity with a colleague and an extraordinary human being, as well as a promising coach like Liam,” said the Leeds manager. “He has only had one season at the helm of Hull in England, then he did a great job abroad. Sometimes we forget that this is his second season in English football, and this position brings enormous pressure. I am sure he will have a brilliant career ahead of him. He is very young, and this experience, although tough, will be a lesson for growth.”
The Leeds coach also acknowledged the impact that a coaching change so close to a decisive match can have on team preparations. “When someone is replaced just before the game, it complicates everything. It’s a fresh start for the Chelsea players, who have quality, and now there’s no longer the excuse of a struggling coach. The players will have to take responsibility and show the essentials, because when high-level players do the basics without excuses, the team becomes a huge threat.”
Farke anticipates a rejuvenated and motivated Chelsea looking to prove that this change is a new starting point: “I expect to see a Chelsea team playing their fluid football at their best level. But this does not diminish our desire for success – we will prepare to face a strong and dangerous opponent, and we also want to achieve victory.”
In the latest news for Leeds, Farke confirmed that Ilia Gruev has suffered a meniscus injury that will keep him out for the season, although he remains hopeful for the recovery and inclusion of Jayden Bogle, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Anton Stach for the decisive clash. The battle at Wembley promises to be fierce, with Leeds trying to break a decades-long drought and Chelsea fighting to salvage the season at a critical and turbulent time.
