Ousmane Dembélé was the undeniable star in Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-1 victory over Toulouse, a win that propels the Parisians to a comfortable four-point lead at the top of Ligue 1. The victory comes at a crucial time, just five days before the highly anticipated Champions League clash against Liverpool, increasing pressure on the opponents and boosting the confidence of Luis Enrique’s team.
This was PSG’s first league match after a two-week break, and also their last until in two weeks, which suggested a careful management of the squad. However, a mini-injury crisis, which sidelined players like Senny Mayulu and Bradley Barcola, forced the coach to field his starting attack, making it clear that the goal was to secure all three points at any cost. The Asturian coach presented a slightly patched-up eleven, notably featuring Lucas Beraldo in midfield, in an attempt to maintain balance against a Toulouse side buoyed by two consecutive wins and in search of a European spot.
For the visiting team, the absences of Charlie Cresswell, due to a muscle injury, and forward Santiago Hidalgo, who was suspended, were felt. Carlos Martínez Novell prepared his team to withstand the pressure from PSG’s attacking trio, managing to limit opportunities in the early minutes of the match. Only Khvicha Kvaratskhelia managed to pose any danger, forcing goalkeeper Guillaume Restes to intervene on two occasions.
The opening goal came midway through the first half, when Toulouse could only clear a cross into the area to the feet of Dembélé, who, with a masterful touch, fired a volley that found the top corner of the net, marking his ninth goal in the league this season. Toulouse did not let their heads drop and responded immediately, taking advantage of two consecutive mistakes from goalkeeper Safonov. Nicolaisen capitalized and headed the ball into the back of the net, equalizing after a corner won due to a defensive error.
However, PSG quickly regained the lead. Kvaratskhelia, always incisive, headed a corner into the area, where Dembélé, opportunistically, tapped in to make it 2-1. The French forward came close to completing his hat-trick just before halftime, but one of his efforts, a close-range shot, was ruled out for offside.
In the second half, the pace of the game slowed significantly, with few opportunities for either side. Toulouse attempted to create danger with long-range shots, but their lack of efficiency and misplaced passes prevented any serious threat to Donnarumma’s goal. PSG, for their part, managed the score, lowering the intensity and controlling the rhythm of the match.
In the final minutes, Luis Enrique took the opportunity to bring on some of his regular starters, including the return of João Neves after an ankle injury. Gonçalo Ramos also came on for the closing moments and had time to round off the scoring, netting PSG’s third goal in stoppage time with a precise shot into the far corner.
With this solid victory, Paris Saint-Germain strengthens its lead in Ligue 1 and demonstrates that it is in form for the decisive clash with Liverpool in the Champions League, showing that despite physical challenges and a tight schedule, the team continues to assert itself and display offensive quality and defensive resilience. The individual brilliance of Dembélé and the collective capability of PSG suggest a high-level European confrontation, where confidence is clearly on the side of the French.
