Golf influencer receives criticism for ignoring Tiger Woods’ arrest.

Recent events in the world of golf have sent shockwaves through the community, with the legendary figure of Tiger Woods embroiled in yet another controversy following his arrest for driving under the influence (DUI). The situation took an even more unexpected turn when golf influencer Samuel Riggs, known for his work as a podcast host and content creator at Barstool Sports, faced criticism for intentionally omitting the news in his coverage. The reaction from fans and commentators was immediate and intense, raising questions about ethics in sports journalism.

In a bold statement, Riggs said: “Do you think I told our team not to publish anything about Tiger Woods’ DUI and to protect him? Of course, I did. You want me in that line. You need me in that line. We’re going to protect Tiger Woods until the end.” The statement, intended to demonstrate loyalty, had the opposite effect, triggering a wave of backlash on social media.

The golf community reacted strongly to Riggs’ position. Michael McEwan, host of The Bunkered Podcast, highlighted the difference between popularity and journalistic integrity: “Just because you have great visibility doesn’t mean you possess true skills of honest journalism,” he stated, emphasizing the need for accountability in sports coverage.

Indignation did not stop there. Fans expressed frustration, with one commenting: “As if no one would know about this if Riggs hadn’t said anything. Ridiculous.” Another added: “The end of journalism. Enjoy it,” reflecting a growing sentiment that Riggs’ loyalty to Woods is inappropriate and dangerous.

To make matters worse, Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, published a screenshot of a conversation suggesting that Riggs had instructed his team to avoid covering the incident. “Why didn’t Barstool cover the biggest sports story??? This just landed on my desk,” he wrote, further amplifying the controversy.

As the controversy escalated, some speculated whether Riggs had privileged access or a close relationship with Woods’ circle, while others labeled him a “blind fan.” Indeed, Riggs is a known admirer of Woods; in 2018, he fulfilled his dream of interviewing him, describing the experience as unforgettable. “My God, I remember every second,” he recalled. However, many fans emphasized that admiration should not overshadow the seriousness of the events.

Public concerns are not unfounded. Woods has a problematic history related to substances and driving incidents. In 2009, he suffered an accident while under the influence of sleeping pills, and in 2017 he was found asleep at the wheel, with a toxicology report revealing the presence of several substances in his system. Following his most recent arrest, Woods refused a urine test, raising concerns about a possible dependence on medication, especially after several back surgeries.

Amid the controversy, some fans came to Riggs’ defense, with one stating: “It’s a good thing he wasn’t drunk. You know this man lives on painkillers because his body is constantly in pain.” This defense highlights the complexity of Woods’ situation, as he has openly discussed his dependence on medication to cope with intense pain resulting from his injuries. Still, the question remains: should loyalty to a sports figure take precedence over the responsibility to report serious facts?

As the debate continues, it becomes clear that the role of influencers and sports journalists carries significant weight. Golf-related media will need to find a balance between admiration for athletes and the ethical obligation to inform, especially when public safety and the well-being of the athletes themselves are at stake. This episode serves as a clear reminder of the responsibilities associated with a media platform, at a time when the boundaries between fandom and responsibility continue to blur.
