Flavio Cobolli, the young talent of Italian tennis, has just surprised the sports world with a decision that is sure to shake up his trajectory this season. The Roman tennis player, currently ranked 14th in the world, announced that he will not defend his title in Bucharest, where he achieved his first victory in ATP tournaments. The decision, confirmed exclusively by Spazio Tennis, leaves fans and experts questioning the reasons behind this unexpected choice.
After a series of performances below expectations, particularly on hard courts – culminating in his elimination in the first round of the Miami Masters 1000 against Raphael Collignon – Cobolli seems to be prioritizing his physical fitness before returning to competition on European soil. His absence in Bucharest, far from being a sign of weakness, reflects a calculated strategy to regain rhythm and confidence. “It’s a necessary sacrifice to put in more training and arrive in Monaco with a stronger physical condition,” Cobolli stated, showing his determination to return to his best form.
Cobolli’s schedule for clay courts is far from compromised. Without any injury to impede him, his presence at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 is assured. The tennis player is determined to compete in the major clay tournaments, including all the 1000 events in his category, as well as the ATP 500 in Munich, where he is already registered. Although his decision results in the loss of 250 points earned last year and a drop in some positions in the ranking, his standing among the best players in the world remains solid.
With Cobolli’s absence, the Bucharest tournament will feature only Francesco Maestrelli as the sole Italian representative, while other notable players such as Rinderknech, Fucsovics, Kecmanovic, Collignon, and Comesana have also opted not to participate. Additionally, in Marrakech, the list of absences includes Vacherot, Munar, Atmane, Shang, and Sonego. The pressure is now on Cobolli, who hopes that this strategic pause will lead to a triumphant return to competition, where he can showcase his true potential in the coming weeks.
