Coco Gauff, a rising star in the world of tennis, is back in the spotlight after securing a place in the final of the 2026 Miami Open, a feat that promises to bring significant changes to the WTA rankings. The 21-year-old American showcased her quality by completely dominating Karolina Muchova in the semifinals, winning decisively 6-1, 6-1. This victory not only places her in the limelight but also confirms her rise in the rankings, leaving her rivals behind.

In a match played on Thursday, Gauff, currently ranked 4th in the world, faced 14th-ranked Muchova. Despite a shaky start—losing her serve in the very first game—Gauff quickly recovered, winning the next ten games without dropping serve again. She demonstrated great resilience, saving seven break points throughout the match, reinforcing her dominance on the court. Her record against Muchova now stands at an impressive 6-0, with 12 of the 13 sets played ending in her favor.

A native of Florida and residing in Delray Beach, Gauff’s journey has been remarkable. Her presence in the final marks her first appearance in the decisive match of this prestigious tournament, making her the youngest American to achieve this since Serena Williams in 2003. The challenge now will be against world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Elena Rybakina in the other semifinal.

The impact of Gauff’s success in Miami goes beyond her on-court performance, directly reflecting in the WTA rankings. At the start of the tournament, Gauff had 6,748 points, sitting 665 points behind former world number 3 Iga Swiatek. However, Swiatek’s early elimination against Magda Linette resulted in a loss of 150 points, paving the way for Gauff to surpass her rival. With her victory in the semi-finals, Gauff increased her total by 530 points, reaching 7,278 and surpassing Swiatek by just 15 points in the live ranking.

If she wins against Sabalenka in the final, Gauff could reach 7,628 points, solidifying her position as world number 3 when the rankings are officially updated next week.

Reflecting on her journey, Gauff spoke about the pressure of competing at the highest level. At the beginning of the tournament, she admitted to feeling “imposter syndrome,” questioning her place among the best. However, after her performance in the semi-finals, she expressed confidence: “Today I didn’t feel like an imposter. I feel like I’m playing good tennis, so I’m going to walk away with my head held high with this victory. It means a lot to me… it wasn’t something I expected, this tournament means a lot. Being in the final is pretty amazing.”

As she prepares for the final against Sabalenka, the tennis world watches with anticipation. It remains to be seen whether this young prospect will be able to claim the title and firmly establish herself among the elite of women’s tennis. The Miami Open has already proven to be a pivotal moment in her career, and the outcome could have a lasting impact on her trajectory and the WTA ranking.
