Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine manager who became a legend in London, does not hide his desire to return to English football, and speculation about a new stint at Tottenham is stronger than ever. Currently at the helm of the United States national team, Pochettino is focused on leading the squad to a home World Cup, but he cannot shake the nostalgia he feels for Premier League football.
For more than five years, Pochettino made history at Tottenham, where he led the team to relentlessly compete for the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final in 2019. This was undoubtedly the most intense phase in the club’s history, despite having remained trophyless until the success in the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou’s guidance last season.
After his departure from Tottenham, Pochettino had stints at renowned clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, where he won his first trophy as a coach, and Chelsea, where his performances were promising, albeit inconsistent. However, his name has once again been linked to Tottenham, which is currently in trouble in the Premier League, facing the risk of relegation with only seven matches remaining until the end of the season.
Although there has not yet been a formal approach from the Spurs, Pochettino revealed that there were discussions in the summer of 2021, prior to the hiring of Nuno Espírito Santo. When asked by L’Equipe about previous attempts to return to London, the Argentine did not hesitate to admit that PSG made his departure difficult.
“Not just Tottenham,” Pochettino told the French publication. “Other very big clubs as well. When that six-month season ended [in 2021], there was a bit of… Well, with all this COVID situation, the situation at the club created instability. In all areas.”
Pochettino’s statements have rekindled hope among Tottenham fans, who are eager for a change that could reverse the team’s current crisis. Will the renowned Argentine coach make history in London once again? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Pochettino’s passion for English football is undeniable, and his return could be what Spurs need to get back on the path to victory.
