Frustration grips Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who struggles to find explanations for his team’s inconsistency. Following a surprising 2-1 defeat to Brighton, just days after an impressive victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League, his words resonate with a sense of despair and perplexity.
“My initial reaction is frustration; I think I’ve been repeating that lately,” Van Dijk declared, visibly shaken. “It’s the situation. I was surprised to see only the number of players who were at training yesterday (Friday), but it is what we have. So, yes, it’s difficult.” The captain of the Reds does not hide his dissatisfaction with the team’s inability to build on a good performance. “I don’t know what else to say – I’ve said this several times in recent months. We can’t capitalize on a good performance. That needs to change if we want to achieve what we’re trying to, which is Champions League football.”
The pressure is high, and Van Dijk does not hesitate to admit that the team is making efforts to turn the situation around. “We are trying everything. We are trying to change this, and we hope to turn the page, but at this moment it doesn’t seem like it will happen. Obviously, now we are going to our different countries. Everyone has the responsibility to stay fit and come back even better, if that’s possible.” The focus now shifts to international commitments, but frustration persists: “I would prefer to try to win games. However, the next one for me is against Norway. That will be my focus now, but the feeling that I and the other players should have is one of frustration, because it’s the same story again. It happened again.”
Van Dijk, who has been asked numerous times about the source of the team’s problems this season, emphasizes that the solution is in the hands of the players: “It’s our responsibility, and we have to solve this as a group. If we can change this, we can be a very dangerous force throughout the entire season. But at this moment, we are not.”
With a busy schedule ahead, including matches against PSG and Fulham, the captain knows that time is short. “We’ll see how everyone comes back and how they embrace this, but no one wants to lose games and stay stuck in this cycle.” He also expresses his frustration for the fans who traveled long distances to support the team, only to see Liverpool fail to deliver a good result once again. “It’s hard. I’m frustrated for the fans. They come here, early, and support us, and we can’t deliver again.”
The situation at Liverpool is critical, and the pressure to turn things around is only increasing. With Van Dijk at the helm, the team urgently needs to find a solution before the season becomes a true rollercoaster of emotions. The near future will tell if they can change the course of events.
