Bryson DeChambeau is shining at LIV Golf South Africa, where an enthusiastic crowd is adding an electrifying touch to the competition. With a two-shot lead after two rounds, DeChambeau is determined to secure his second consecutive victory, following his triumph at LIV Golf Singapore. The vibrant atmosphere and energy from South African fans have been a spectacle in their own right, making this tournament unforgettable.
DeChambeau, who stood out with an impressive 6 under par (65) in the second round, began his journey with an eagle on hole 1, followed by birdies on three of the next four holes. Despite a double bogey on hole 12 preventing a clearer escape, he still maintains a solid lead. “I felt like I could have shot 9 or 10 under par, given how I started… It was a round with ups and downs, but overall I’m very proud of how I finished. There’s still a lot of golf left to play,” DeChambeau stated, demonstrating confidence and determination.
The atmosphere at Steyn City is electrifying, and DeChambeau did not hesitate to praise the fervor of the local fans. “What a vibe! I’m really impressed with the energy here and the love we feel. It really energizes all of us players and makes us want to give back even more,” he said, highlighting the importance of crowd support.
While DeChambeau shines, South African players such as Branden Grace and Dean Burmester are also showcasing their talent. Grace, who is tied for second place with David Puig, is leading the efforts of the Southern Guards GC, a team of four South African professionals. Burmester, on the other hand, had the best round of the day with an impressive 64, without any bogeys, placing him in a tie for fourth.
In Friday’s round, Burmester delighted the crowd with a spectacular shot on the par-3 17th hole, known as “The Lion’s Den,” which recreates the festive atmosphere of the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale, complete with fireworks. The Southern Guards GC is just one stroke off the lead in the team race, following an impressive performance from Torque GC.
Jon Rahm, who is tied for fourth place, continues his impressive streak, not making any bogeys during the first 36 holes, with rounds of 65 and 66. With the Masters less than three weeks away, both Rahm and DeChambeau are in excellent form, ready to shine in golf’s biggest event.
Finally, Phil Mickelson, a golf legend and six-time major champion, made his season debut at LIV Golf South Africa, recovering from an opening round of 75 to finish the second round with a 67 and equal par. The competition promises to intensify as the weekend approaches, and all eyes will be on what DeChambeau and his rivals can do in the coming days.
