In the vibrant world of golf, few moments are as coveted as the chance to get close to an icon like Tiger Woods. At the recent Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Akshay Bhatia, a young talent on the PGA Tour, not only managed to compete but also established a personal connection with the legendary player. While many professionals spend their careers dreaming of being in Woods’ orbit, Bhatia has already achieved this impressive feat, becoming one of the rare exceptions.

In statements on the “ForePlay” podcast, Bhatia expressed his admiration and the “luck” he feels for having access to Woods, which he believes is a privilege few can attain. “I think it’s obviously amazing. Being close to him is cool, and the number of people who want to be part of his inner circle is huge. The opportunity to play for his team is fantastic,” he said. Bhatia’s excitement is palpable, especially when recalling his first encounter with Woods, when nerves took over. “The first time I met Tiger, I was as nervous as anyone. But now it’s incredible to see how our text conversations have evolved, especially when he texts me after winning or being in contention. That’s really cool,” he added.

Discussing his relationship with the golf icon in a conversation with Sam “Riggs” Bozoian, Bhatia revealed that as Woods approaches the end of his career, he has become more accessible and willing to share his knowledge with new generations. “If Tiger were at the peak of his career, the dynamic might be quite different,” reflected Bhatia, who is now an integral member of Woods’ TGL team at Jupiter Links GC. For the 24-year-old, this relationship goes beyond the professional; he describes it as a true brotherhood.

Bhatia highlighted the friendship he has developed not only with Woods but also with other notable figures in golf, such as Max Homa, Tom Kim, and Kevin Kisner. He described his first meeting with Woods as something “surreal,” and a particular moment stood out during the Masters at Augusta, where Woods affectionately gave him the nickname “Ashtray,” a moniker that quickly went viral on social media.

The impact of being close to Woods is evident in Bhatia’s results, who, at just 24, has already accumulated three victories on the PGA Tour. The last season was memorable for him, with a third-place finish at the Players Championship and a prominent position in the FedEx Cup rankings. The success even attracted an offer from LIV Golf, led by Phil Mickelson, but Bhatia chose to remain on the PGA Tour, joining TGL, where Woods announced his arrival with the excited remark, “Lefty has arrived.”

Reflecting on Woods, Bhatia said: “Once you get to know Tiger, he becomes like a brother. It’s really cool for us to experience this, this other side of him, not just as a golfer, but as a person. It’s very special.” With a promising future ahead, golf fans can hardly wait to see how Bhatia’s career will unfold now that he is under the mentorship of one of the biggest names in the history of the sport.
