“Spurs and Man Utd give new hope to Liam Rosenior and Chelsea in the race for the Champions League.”

Chelsea managed to avoid a disastrous weekend in their quest for qualification for the Champions League, despite a bitter defeat against Newcastle United. The Stamford Bridge team suffered a disappointing loss, where a goal from Anthony Gordon in the first half was enough for the Blues to drop more points at home in the Premier League.

“It’s frustrating,” reflected coach Liam Rosenior. “In the first 15, 20 minutes we dominated the game, with a wave of attacking intent. But we conceded a really poor goal after switching off during a press. They played a direct pass through the midfield and went forward – that gave them something to hold onto.” The pressure was on, and the team’s inability to maintain focus cost them dearly.

“After that, the rest of the game was attack against defense. Congratulations to Newcastle and Eddie Howe, because they defended their lead and were happy to sit back. We didn’t have that mental freshness to unlock them, which ultimately cost us the game.” Chelsea’s decline in league results comes at a critical moment, when they cannot afford to lose ground in the final weeks of the season, which will determine their European fate for next season.

Currently, Chelsea is in a fierce battle with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool for the last Champions League qualification spots, while Brentford dreams of a late recovery. After their defeat to Newcastle, the Blues needed favorable results on Sunday, and fortunately for them, that happened. Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 3-1, ensuring Chelsea remained just three points behind Unai Emery’s team. At the same time, Liverpool was unable to win at home, drawing with Tottenham Hotspur despite a goal from Dominik Szoboszlai that put the hosts in the lead. However, they failed to secure the game, and Richarlison managed to earn a deserved point for the relegation-threatened visitors at Anfield.

This scenario offers Chelsea a second opportunity as they prepare for their next challenge, where they will face Everton in Merseyside before the start of the international break. The coming weeks are crucial for Rosenior and his team, who need to talk less and focus on eradicating the regular mistakes that have been unacceptable and continue to cost the Blues points.

If they do not, they risk falling out of the Champions League qualification spots. The current situation may seem discouraging, but it is not lost. Chelsea has the power to change their destiny, and this weekend served as a reminder of what is at stake and what needs to be improved. The responsibility is in their hands, and if they fail, they will only have themselves to blame come the end of May.
