Akshay Bhatia, the young golf prodigy, finds himself at the center of a storm of controversy following his victory at Bay Hill, where allegations of cheating have cast a shadow over his performance. Passionate fans have raised doubts about the legality of his putting technique, insinuating that the athlete may be using an illegal method to gain an unfair advantage on the green. Despite not competing at TPC Sawgrass a week later, the harassment and shouts from spectators did not cease, leading Bhatia to consider an unusual method to prove his innocence.
On social media, Dan Rapaport, a well-known commentator, shared an image from the event broadcast, where Bhatia was heard saying, “I want to take a picture putting with my shirt off.” With this bold proposal, Bhatia suggests that by performing his putt shirtless, fans could clearly see if he is anchoring the shaft of his putter against his chest, a practice that is strictly prohibited. If he can maintain accuracy in his putting without the support of his body, his innocence will be demonstrated. Although the idea may seem absurd, it is, in fact, one of the few ways he has to disprove his critics. However, the likelihood of doing so at TPC Sawgrass is slim, but Bhatia may still share evidence on social media.
The situation should not have dragged into TPC Sawgrass, as Bhatia was not even competing for the topic to resurface. After two rounds, he found himself 10 strokes behind Ludvig Aberg on the leaderboard.
Despite the frenzy on social media, Bhatia has not faced criticism from fellow players, a solid indication that his putting technique is not as controversial as has been suggested. Michael Kim, one of his peers, commented on how the situation looks different up close. He noted that concerns about Bhatia’s anchoring are not shared by other players on the PGA Tour, which is significant considering they are the ones most affected.
Kim expressed himself on Twitter: “It’s funny to me that Akshay’s anchoring is a topic. Personally, it doesn’t seem that close to me. It’s not a concern among the players.” He added that if the issue were truly problematic, players would be much more worried than fans, and since Bhatia’s colleagues are not showing any unease, perhaps internet users should not be so hasty in their conclusions.
What unfolds here is an intriguing narrative about the pressure athletes face, not only in competitions but also on social media, where the voices of the crowd can quickly turn into a deafening clamor. As Bhatia navigates this controversy, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to silence his critics and reaffirm his position in the sport.
