Elena Rybakina is about to make history in the WTA rankings, taking advantage of Iga Swiatek’s defeat in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Open. The current Wimbledon champion, Swiatek, saw her No. 2 ranking threatened since Rybakina won the Australian Open earlier in the season. After some disappointing performances during the Middle Eastern swing, Rybakina finally showcased her worth by reaching the semi-finals of this important WTA 1000 tournament.
Swiatek appeared to be back in top form after defeating Karolina Muchova in the round of 16, but her journey was halted by Elina Svitolina in a tense battle that concluded in three sets. This defeat not only sealed the Polish player’s fate but also provided Rybakina with a golden opportunity to overtake her by facing Jessica Pegula. And Rybakina did not hesitate: she dominated the fifth seed, winning with an impressive 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), thus securing her spot in the semi-finals against Svitolina.
After her victory, Rybakina commented on the quality of her performance: “I think the quality of my game was good. I started very well, very aggressively, and my serve was working today. In the second set, of course, Jessica is a tough player. I felt like I played a bit passively. She took the opportunity and took the lead. It was a battle every game, a lot of tight exchanges. I was just trying to fight and find a way. In the end, everything worked out.”
The impact on the rankings is significant. Swiatek started the tournament with a 335-point lead over Rybakina, but she was defending 390 points earned in the 2025 edition, while her quarter-final appearance only earned her 215 points. This means she will lose 175 points, finishing the competition in California with 7,413 points. On the other hand, Rybakina, who had only 120 points to defend from last year, secured 390 points by reaching the semi-finals, putting her in a favorable position with a positive balance of +270, totaling 7,523 points.
It is important to note that this difference will increase if Rybakina reaches the final or wins the title. However, even then, she will not be able to surpass the world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, who maintains a 2,800-point lead over the Kazakh player in the live rankings. For Swiatek, this will be the first time since August 2025 that she will not occupy a position among the top two in the ranking, reflecting her inability to successfully defend her title at Roland Garros last year.
The battle in the WTA rankings has never been more intense, and all eyes will be on the next steps of Rybakina, who continues to carve her way to the top.
