Jannik Sinner continues to impress at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open, where he secured a place in the semifinals after a convincing victory over young American talent Lerner Tien, with scores of 6-1, 6-2. The world number two’s performance was marked by his calmness and absolute control, dominating the match from the baseline and capitalizing on crucial moments to secure the win in straight sets. This result not only solidifies his consistency in the tournament but also reaffirms the Italian’s status as one of the most reliable players on hard courts in ATP Masters 1000 events.

Sinner, just 22 years old, has shown a solid start to the season, combining an aggressive baseline game with a significantly improved serving efficiency throughout the tournament. After the match, he shared insights about the intense work he has been doing with his team over the past few months, emphasizing that the visible improvements in Indian Wells are the result of a long-term process rather than a sudden surge in form.

“It’s not just this week. The work we’ve been doing has been going on for some time. We’ve been working hard, especially over the last two or three months. We’ve probably worked even more than before. It’s just a matter of time until the level rises,” said Sinner, explaining the basis of his recent success.

The serve was also a point that Sinner highlighted after the match. Throughout the tournament, he has demonstrated impressive efficiency on his first serve, something that proved crucial in managing critical situations against Tien. “We’re trying to serve well. In the important moments today, I served well. On break points, I tried to be aggressive,” said Sinner, who also emphasized the importance of tactical adaptability in each match.

“Every match is different. Tactically, you have to play differently each time. Now we try to understand how to play in the next match. It will be a very difficult, very exhausting game. But these are exactly the kinds of matches I train for,” added the tennis player, who already considers his presence in the semi-finals a great achievement.

Despite the lopsided result, Sinner praised his opponent, Lerner Tien, one of the most promising young talents on the ATP tour. The Italian commended the teenager’s progress, who has been catching attention this season with impressive performances against established opponents. “I feel like he’s improving a lot. Regardless of today’s result, he’s evolving. His groundstrokes are getting stronger, and physically he’s improving quite a bit,” analyzed Sinner.

He added that Tien’s evolution has been visible not only in this tournament, but also in recent matches against high-level players. “He is going to be a very difficult player to beat in the future. He has already shown that against incredible players in the past and also recently. It will be very interesting to see how he evolves,” he concluded.

With the victory over Tien, Sinner is now preparing for an even bigger challenge in the semi-finals, where he will face world number four, Alexander Zverev. This matchup promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament’s final stage. Sinner acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming clash, emphasizing the familiarity between the two athletes, who have faced each other several times on the ATP circuit. “It’s going to be a tough match. We know each other very well, so we will try to be as consistent as possible. For sure, he will change some things, so I have to be very attentive,” said the Italian.

While waiting for the match time to be determined, which could influence the playing conditions, Sinner remains focused on delivering the best level possible, regardless of when he plays. “I have seen some of his matches. He is playing great tennis. I will try to bring my best game, depending also on when and at what time we play. That changes the matchup a bit, but I am looking forward to these kinds of matches. This is what I train for. The semi-finals of major tournaments.”
