Justin Thomas, one of the most prominent names in golf, made a remarkable comeback at the Players Championship, following a traumatic week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational where he finished in last place. With an impressive start, Thomas shot four under par, ending the day tied for second place at TPC Sawgrass. This performance comes just days after a disappointing outing, where, after a long recovery from an injury, he was unable to make the cut at Bay Hill, posting two rounds of 79.
However, on Thursday, Thomas appeared to be at home, showcasing the form many had hoped to see. “Yes, it was great,” Thomas said, reflecting on the start of a significant tournament. “It’s always a pleasure to play here. This course is fun, and whenever I can, I like to compete on it.” His words conveyed not only relief but also a renewed sense of confidence.
The 30-year-old player admitted that the difficulties of the previous week were crucial in helping him shake off the accumulated rust. “I can’t say I was playing well, as last week was my first competition in six months. But I knew I was capable. I just managed to shake off a bit of the rust last week — a lot of rust — and today I felt much more comfortable,” said Thomas.
The noticeable difference in his performance was evident throughout the round. Thomas started with birdies on his first three holes and, over the last five holes, he added three more birdies, although he dropped two shots on holes 17 and 18, finishing with a 68. “Literally everything was better. In fact, I don’t know. My bunker game and my chip last week were ridiculous for someone who finished 14 over par. But yes, everything you can imagine was quite a bit better,” he commented.
The numbers corroborated this impressive improvement. Justin Thomas gained about 2.5 strokes on the green, with all of his birdies coming from within 10 feet. He also stood out among the top players in the tournament with his performance off the tee.
As the winner of the Players Championship in 2021, Thomas is now aiming to win the title for a second time, and his performance on the first day puts him in an excellent position to do so.
When can we see Justin Thomas in action again? He is scheduled to return to the course for the second round of the Players Championship, with a start time set for 1:42 PM (ET) this Friday, where he will play alongside Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood. This trio, which impressed in the opening round, promises more excitement for fans.
The Players Championship remains one of the most anticipated events on the golf calendar, and Justin Thomas, with his resurgence at Sawgrass, is undoubtedly one of the key players to watch.
