Antoine Griezmann, the star of Atlético de Madrid, has just given fans a reason to celebrate. The French forward confirmed that he will remain at the club until at least the end of the season, dispelling rumors linking him to a transfer to Major League Soccer. What could have been a career-changing move for the 32-year-old player, who has been in excellent form, now appears to be a matter of loyalty to the club that welcomed him.
Recently, tempting offers have emerged from MLS clubs, particularly from Orlando City, which attempted to bring Griezmann to the United States before the transfer deadline of March 26. The timing of the transfer could mean millions for the player, but he has chosen to focus on his mission with the Colchoneros. Negotiations for a possible free transfer in the summer are currently underway, but Griezmann has made it clear that he will not leave Madrid in the middle of the season.
After the impressive 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16 of the Champions League, Griezmann did not hesitate to share his happiness. “I am very happy here, I am really enjoying it. What I do on the pitch speaks for itself. We’ll see, but the idea is to go all the way to the end and then others can talk,” he said in statements to Movistar+. The French forward also expressed his dream of winning major trophies, particularly regarding the Copa del Rey final, where Atlético has qualified to face Barcelona.
Griezmann’s performance in the victory over Tottenham did not go unnoticed, especially as he capitalized on crucial errors in the opposing defense. “We did well, we took advantage of some of their mistakes or the pitch, but we are used to that. We need to improve what we did in Barcelona to avoid repeating it,” he said, recalling the 3-0 defeat to the Catalans in the Copa semi-final. He acknowledged that the pressure Atlético exerted on the opponent was crucial in forcing the errors and building the victory.
The upcoming challenges for Atlético include a home match against Getafe at the Metropolitano, followed by a reunion with Tottenham at the Spurs’ stadium next Wednesday. With Griezmann leading the front line, fans can expect a fierce and determined performance, not only in pursuit of victories but also for a bright future at the club.
