Naomi Osaka, one of the brightest stars in women’s tennis, was not intimidated by Aryna Sabalenka’s comments following the Belarusian’s convincing victory at the Indian Wells Open. With a clear score of 6-2, 6-4, Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals, but what really caught attention was the exchange of barbs that took place off the court, revealing the complexity of the relationship between the two athletes and their professional choices.
After the match, Sabalenka was asked about Osaka’s recent agency switch, as she left Evolve, the company she founded with her agent Stuart Duguid, to return to IMG. “I feel sorry for her for going back from Evolve to IMG. I don’t think it’s a smart decision,” Sabalenka said with a laugh. “I’m happy, I’m super happy, because now, all the time, they were kind of balancing between me and Naomi, now I have most of the time. I’m happy about that.” These words, spoken in a light tone, quickly made headlines in the press.
When journalists brought Sabalenka’s statements to Osaka, the former world number one responded calmly and with a smile: “Was she laughing when she said that?” Her reaction showed that, despite the provocations, Osaka maintained a calm and focused demeanor.
“Look, we are two different people,” Osaka said about the situation. “I think her experiences are not the same as mine, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. For me, I’ve always loved IMG.” The tennis player continued to explain her positive experience with the agency, stating: “I was treated very well there, and the people are very kind to me. I would recommend IMG to others. I believe she wouldn’t do the same. But I think we have very different experiences in different places.”
The conversation exposed the complicated relationship between the two agencies, Evolve and IMG, with both athletes having been associated with them over the years. Evolve, the sports management boutique that Osaka launched in 2022, was a project aimed at bridging the worlds of sports and entertainment. Since then, the two players have switched agencies: Osaka returned to IMG in December, while Sabalenka moved to Evolve in January 2025. Duguid himself was present in Sabalenka’s players’ box during the match, adding another layer of intrigue to the rivalry.
Osaka emphasized that the agency’s topic did not affect her concentration during the match. “For me, I don’t think so, no,” she said. “Obviously, I don’t have that experience, but I’m the player who doesn’t look to the side at all during the game. I don’t notice people, I don’t hear things.” With unwavering focus, Osaka stated that her attention remains on the court. “I’m just focused on tennis. I feel that’s how it should be.”
In sports, captivating rivalries are always sought after, and the clash between Sabalenka and Osaka offers a rich story that extends beyond the courts, touching on fashion, business ventures, and cultural influences. However, the outcome on the court was clear: Sabalenka dominated and defeated the former champion in straight sets.
The rivalry between these two tennis players is rare and valuable, with their first meeting occurring in 2018 at the US Open, where Osaka emerged victorious in an intense three-set battle. Since then, both of their careers have taken different paths. While Sabalenka has risen to the top of women’s tennis with four Grand Slam titles, Osaka has struggled to regain her form after motherhood.
Sabalenka, reflecting on the rarity of their encounters, said: “That’s insane. Can you believe that, after so many years on the circuit, we’ve only played once? But I feel like I started to do better when she got pregnant.” The Belarusian believes that the future holds more meetings between the two.
Now, Sabalenka is preparing to face Victoria Mboko in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open, where she will enter with confidence and positive momentum. The anticipation is palpable: fans are waiting to see if Mboko can pull off an upset or if Sabalenka will continue her path towards yet another semifinal at Indian Wells.
