Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis prodigy, continues to surprise the world with his talent and resilience, and his journey at the Indian Wells Open is a testament to that. After a tense victory in the third round, Alcaraz revealed that every time he steps onto the court, he feels the pressure of having a “target on his back.” The 20-year-old, who has already won seven Grand Slam titles, is experiencing a remarkable moment, maintaining an impressive unbeaten streak of 14 matches.
However, the path was not easy against the world number 28, Arthur Rinderknech. Alcaraz started the match at a disadvantage, losing the first set and facing a break early in the second. But the fighting spirit of the Spanish tennis player came to the fore. He managed to recover, breaking his opponent’s serve and then dominated the decisive set, securing a victory by 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-2.
During the court interview, Alcaraz did not hold back in praising his opponent, stating: “He was playing his best tennis, I would say, at the beginning of the second set. For me, it was really, really difficult. I struggled, to be honest, but I am very happy with how I dealt with everything that was happening. I accepted the situation, kept fighting, stayed mentally strong, and tried to do some different things… I felt like I started to play more solidly, waiting for my opportunities.”
The subject changed when, at the post-match press conference, Alcaraz was asked about the tendency of players to elevate their level of play when facing him. With a touch of humor, he joked: “To be honest, sometimes I get tired of playing against Roger Federer in every round. Sometimes, I feel like they play at an insane level.” The world number one expressed his perplexity: “If they played that way in every match, they should be higher in the rankings. But, obviously, it’s something that concerns me. While I’m playing, it’s something that crosses my mind. All I can do is accept, keep going, and try to change the dynamics of the match.”
Alcaraz acknowledged the pressure he feels: “I feel like I have a target on my back and that if they don’t play that kind of tennis, they can’t win.” As he progresses in the tournament, Alcaraz’s next challenge will be against the 13th seed, Casper Ruud, in a rematch of the 2022 US Open final, which Alcaraz won memorably. Ruud, for his part, also had a tough victory, defeating Valentin Vacherot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
With a combination of talent, determination, and humor, Carlos Alcaraz continues to captivate the audience and leave an indelible mark on the world tennis scene. His journey at the Indian Wells Open promises to be exciting, and all eyes will be on his next battle in pursuit of more achievements.
