The fifth day of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells was marked by a wave of emotions and surprises, with Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Joao Fonseca advancing to the next stage of the tournament. The spectacle in “Tennis Paradise” did not disappoint, offering tennis fans a series of thrilling matchups, including one of the biggest surprises of the day, where Learner Tien overcame Ben Shelton.
Jannik Sinner, in an impressive display, easily defeated Denis Shapovalov with a score of 6-3, 6-2. The Italian, ranked number 2 in the world, started the match with slight nerves but quickly found his rhythm, capitalizing on errors from the Canadian at crucial moments. Shapovalov, who began strong by breaking Sinner’s serve, was unable to maintain the pressure, allowing the Italian to take control of the match. With a fantastic first serve percentage of 84%, Sinner asserted his dominance and secured his place in the next round.
“I felt good on the court today. I was able to control the match and took advantage of the opportunities that arose,” Sinner said after the match, reflecting on his solid performance.
Alexander Zverev had an intense battle against Brandon Nakashima, triumphing with a score of 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-4. The match was decided by narrow margins, with both players showcasing solid serving. Zverev, who lost the first set in a tie-break, did not let it affect him and managed to pressure Nakashima in the final moments of the second set, securing a vital break that led him to the deciding set. The German’s effectiveness on return was decisive, especially in the third set, where he won 61% of the points on Nakashima’s second serve.
“It was a tough match, but I managed to find my rhythm at the end,” Zverev commented, expressing his satisfaction with the victory.
Learner Tien, for his part, was the standout of the day as he eliminated Ben Shelton in an electrifying match that ended 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3. The 20-year-old showed great resilience, especially in the first set, where he saved four break points and kept his composure during the tie-break. Shelton, who started the match strong, could not maintain his level of performance in the deciding set, allowing Tien to advance convincingly.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also shone by defeating Jakub Mensik 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The Spaniard started strong but had to regroup after losing the second set. He demonstrated great consistency in his serving and capitalized on critical moments, converting five of ten break point opportunities.
Joao Fonseca, one of the tournament’s revelations, made history by defeating Tommy Paul with a convincing 6-2, 6-3. The 19-year-old Brazilian demonstrated impressive control, breaking Paul’s serve several times and maintaining pressure with a strong performance on both serves.
In a Canadian battle, Felix Auger-Aliassime leveraged his experience to defeat Gabriel Diallo 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, after a challenging start. Diallo began in great form, but Auger-Aliassime adjusted his game and managed to impose himself, securing the victory and a spot in the next round.
With these spectacular performances, the tournament moves on to the next stage, promising more excitement and challenges for the stars of world tennis. The stage is set for an exhilarating round of 16, where each player will attempt to secure a place in the final stages of the tournament.
