Cristian Chivu, the coach of Inter Milan, did not hide his disappointment after his team’s recent performance in the Scudetto battle against AC Milan. In statements following the match, Chivu emphasized that his team’s performance was “below expectations,” adding that even if they had secured victory, “nothing would have changed” in the title race. Inter, who entered the match with a 10-point lead, saw that margin reduced to just seven after a frustrating draw.
The major clash at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, which promised to be a decisive chapter in the fight for the championship, ultimately exposed Inter’s weaknesses. Chivu lamented his team’s inability to break through Milan’s defensive block, stating: “Our first half was slow, and conceding the goal was a hard blow.” The coach highlighted the importance of improving the team’s dynamics, especially after a performance that left much to be desired.
The absence of key players, such as Marcus Thuram, who was affected by flu-like symptoms, and Lautaro Martinez, who was sidelined due to injury, further complicated Inter’s task. The new attacking duo, composed of Francesco Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny, struggled to gel, resulting in a lack of creativity and effectiveness in attack. “We tried everything to get around their defensive block, but we failed to break it,” Chivu lamented.
Despite some attempts at attack, including a good chance created by Dimarco, Inter was unable to capitalize. “We reached the byline, but without clear situations. The crosses were easily cleared by their defenders,” explained Chivu, referring to the poor offensive performance. The game strategy seemed ineffective, with Milan adopting a defensive posture and taking advantage of counterattacks.
Chivu acknowledged that the youth of his forwards should not be used as an excuse, stating that, despite their inexperience, experiencing this type of match is crucial for the players’ development. “We should have shown more intensity and determination on the field,” said the coach. Inter, who had been on a series of positive results in Serie A, including 14 victories, now faces increasing pressure after a goalless draw in the Coppa Italia semi-final against Como and an early elimination from the Champions League.
Criticism of the team has been frequent, and Chivu mentioned that the lack of recognition for Inter’s previous successes is a problem. “We can and must do better. However, we still have a seven-point lead, and 30 points are up for grabs. We need to focus on what we have done so far,” he concluded.
With a history showing that neither Inter nor Milan has managed to win the Scudetto in the same season they lost both derbies, the pressure on Chivu and his team increases as the season progresses. With 10 games remaining, Inter’s future will be decided in the coming weeks, and fans are eager for a strong response. The title is within reach, but the path to glory is fraught with challenges.
