Jack Draper, the British tennis prodigy and current champion at Indian Wells, is back and promises to make waves. After a year of ups and downs and a challenging recovery period, the young athlete is determined to shine again on the circuit. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe I could go far,” Draper stated during his pre-tournament press conference, revealing his unwavering confidence in his ability to compete at the highest level.
Draper’s return to Indian Wells is not just about competition; it is a reunion with one of his favorite tournaments, where he achieved his first major victory last year against Holger Rune. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be back here. The year has gone by so fast, but also slowly. This is definitely one of my favorite tournaments, especially after the memories from last year. I’m really grateful to be back on the circuit and to be able to do what I love,” the athlete said, visibly emotional.
Meanwhile, the current global situation affecting many players in the Dubai region has not gone unnoticed. “It’s a very concerning situation. I was in Dubai last week and managed to leave, probably on one of the last available flights. I hope the players and the entire ATP team can arrive here safely. This situation is alarming for everyone involved,” said Draper, showing empathy for his fellow professionals.
After months away due to a physical issue, Draper is clear about his current state. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t feel I could go far again,” he emphasized, revealing that although he faced difficulties, he never stopped training. “I didn’t have an injury that kept me off the court. I was able to train and have sessions over a long period. I just wasn’t ready to play at the highest level and sustain multiple consecutive matches as I wanted to return to the elite of tennis.”
Draper’s confidence in his arm and his team is evident. “I have no fears about my arm. I’m surrounded by great people and now I also have experience in these situations. I want to ensure that everything is done the right way so that I can play week after week and stay on the tour,” he stated, demonstrating maturity and a strategic vision for his return.
Draper has no doubts about his ambitions for the tournament. “I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t be in the draw, if I didn’t feel I could go far again. That was probably the main reason I didn’t go to Australia: if I’m entering a tournament, I want to feel physically ready not just to participate, but to fight for victory. I really believe in my tennis and I know that when I step onto the court, I can play at a very high level.”
He also reflects on his evolution. “I feel that I’ve improved a lot as a player over the last eight months, but I recognize that I’ve been away from competition and that returning immediately to this level after such a long time is a big challenge. We’ll see what happens. I’m not thinking too much about things. My priority is to take care of my body and ensure that I’m fully prepared when I step onto the court. I’ve always trusted my tennis, so let’s see how far I can go,” he concluded.
With this determination and focus, Jack Draper is ready to face the challenges that await him at Indian Wells, where expectations are high and the competition is fierce. What is at stake is more than a tournament; it is the reaffirmation of a rising talent seeking to make his mark in the world of tennis.
