“A winning mentality in the fight for the title: What pressure teaches”

The thrilling race for the title of the Premier League is reaching unprecedented levels of adrenaline, with Arsenal and Manchester City fiercely battling for the throne of English football. With only nine games remaining, Arsenal holds a five-point lead, but the pressure is palpable, especially considering that the Gunners have not won the championship in 22 years. The situation becomes even more intriguing with City having a game in hand and set to host Arsenal in April, in a match that could determine the fate of the title.

Revealing statistics show that in 11 of the last 30 seasons, the teams that were leading after 28 matchdays failed to secure the Premier League title. This is a statistic that weighs heavily on the shoulders of Arsenal’s players, as they faltered in 2023 and 2024 when they were at the top of the table. The question arises: who will be under greater pressure? Is it really better to be the hunter or the prey?

Alan Shearer, the all-time top scorer in Premier League history and champion with Blackburn in 1994-95, confidently states: “It’s better to be chased.” For Shearer, being at the top means that destiny is in your hands. “If you keep winning, as difficult as that is, the teams chasing you have no answers.”

He also recalls the pressure he felt in his second season at Blackburn, where, despite being in the lead, the shadow of Manchester United loomed over them. “We were always between first and second place, but the pressure was intense. The following season, United was closing in on us, and every mistake we made was capitalized on by them. It was tough, but we found a way to win.”

Steph Houghton, a champion of the Women’s Super League (WSL) with stints at Arsenal and Manchester City, also shares her experience: “The pressure is enormous in both situations, but I always prefer to be the one being chased, as I already have the points in the bag and can approach each game as it comes. Even with the pressure, it’s about performing under pressure.”

On the side of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola is no stranger to finishing strong in a title race. Last season, the team went through an unbeaten run in their last 23 matches, securing 19 victories and finishing two points ahead of Arsenal. For Guardiola, pressure is a constant, especially when his team plays before their rivals, where he has recorded 11 wins in 15 direct encounters in this situation.

Martin Keown, former Gunners defender and three-time Premier League winner, emphasizes that how Arsenal handles pressure will define their campaign. “When you desire something intensely, the pressure can be overwhelming. They are not used to being in front often; it’s almost a reset they need to make,” said Keown.

Steve Bruce, who won three Premier League titles with Manchester United, adds: “Arsenal has shown remarkable consistency. Every game is a battle, especially being Arsenal, who haven’t won the title in so long. The big players need to step up now.”

The race for the Premier League title has never been so intense and thrilling. With every game counting and the pressure mounting, Arsenal and Manchester City are set for an epic battle. The question remains: who will emerge victorious in the end? The answer may be just a few games away.
