Lucrezia Stefanini, the young Italian tennis player, found herself at the center of an alarming situation that shook the sports world. The athlete, who recently competed in the BNP Paribas Open, revealed that she received a shocking death threat via a WhatsApp message. The content of the message, which included an image of a gun and direct references to her family, left Stefanini in shock, but her courage in facing the challenge was exemplary.
“Today I am here to share what happened to me yesterday. Around one in the afternoon, I received a message via WhatsApp threatening me if I won the match. They threatened me and my family, mentioning my parents and the place where I was born. They sent a photo of a gun,” explained Stefanini, visibly shaken but determined not to be intimidated.
The Italian tennis player did not hesitate to act quickly, reporting the serious incident to the WTA, which promptly increased security around her. “It is unacceptable that someone has to go through such intense pressure and not feel safe. As soon as I reported what happened, the WTA was very attentive, and the entire tournament mobilized to ensure that I felt protected,” continued the athlete, who nonetheless decided to take to the court, fighting until the end in her match against Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, which she ultimately lost in three sets.
Stefanini expressed her outrage regarding what she considered an attack not only on her integrity but also on the spirit of the sport. “I cannot allow these people to intimidate me or dictate my career. Tennis is my job and my passion, and I cannot believe that our sport has come to this point. I did not pay attention to these threats, but I will continue to denounce this type of behavior,” she stated, showing admirable determination.
The story of Lucrezia Stefanini is not just an account of a threat, but a reminder of what many athletes face away from the spotlight. Her bravery in exposing this dangerous situation highlights the urgent need for a safe environment for all competitors, where the passion for sport is not overshadowed by fear and intimidation. The sports community must come together to ensure that no one has to face such situations, and that the true spirit of sport prevails.
