Daniil Medvedev, the former world number one and 2021 US Open champion, finds himself in a precarious situation in Dubai, where the closure of airspace due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East is preventing him from leaving the city. The Russian tennis player, who recently secured his 23rd ATP Tour title without having to step on court in the final of the Dubai Championships, expressed the uncertainty surrounding his travel in a video for the Russian outlet More!.

“Of course, the situation is unusual. The airspace is closed, and no one knows when we will be able to fly,” declared Medvedev, who is in Dubai with his family and support team. The tennis player explained that, despite the tension, his health and well-being are intact: “For me, everything is fine. Naturally, I have received many messages from friends and acquaintances; everyone is concerned. But I can say for myself that everything is well.”

The final of the ATP 500 tournament, which was scheduled to take place last Saturday, was cancelled after his opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, had to withdraw due to an injury to his tendon. This event, which was supposed to be a celebration of tennis, was overshadowed by the impacts of an escalation of violence in the region, where the United States and Israel have launched airstrikes in various locations in Iran, leading to an Iranian counterattack against US bases in neighboring countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

With the closure of the UAE airspace, Medvedev and other players involved, including those from the doubles final, find themselves stranded in the city, with no clear prospect of when they will be able to continue their careers at the ATP Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, scheduled to begin on March 4. “It’s uncertain how long this will last, so we’re just waiting to see what happens in the next hours and days. The airport closure is being gradually delayed,” the tennis player added.

Medvedev, who was the runner-up in Indian Wells in 2023 and 2024, is expected to be the 11th seed in this year’s edition of the prestigious tournament. The current situation serves as a grim reminder of how sport can be affected by events beyond the control of athletes. Like many, he is eagerly awaiting a resolution that will allow him to resume his competitive routine.
