The ATX Open in Austin has undergone a shocking turnaround that has left the tournament on the brink of collapse. The first major surprise was the withdrawal of top seed Jessica Pegula, following her victory in Dubai. Now, the drama has intensified with the elimination of young prospect Iva Jovic, who fell to the experienced Ajla Tomljanovic. The Australian player, currently ranked 74th in the world, managed to defeat Jovic with a close 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 scoreline, leaving only one seeded player remaining in the tournament.
Since the start of the season, Iva Jovic has been in the spotlight, especially after her impressive performances in Australia. The 18-year-old began the year with a spectacular run, reaching the semifinals of the ASB Classic, and despite a surprising defeat in the final of the Hobart International to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, she showcased her potential. The peak of her form came at the Australian Open, where she advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by world number one Aryna Sabalenka. After a break, Jovic returned to the circuit at the Dubai competition, where she was eliminated by Pegula, the eventual champion, before arriving in Austin as the top seed, ready to contend for another WTA title.
Unfortunately, Jovic faced a tough challenge against Tomljanovic. The match began with the young player showing resilience, saving several break points before securing a break at the end of the first set. However, Tomljanovic, an experienced Grand Slam player, did not let this affect her and fought back. With a break in the second set, the match went to a decisive third set. Despite Jovic managing to recover a break, Tomljanovic remained determined and, after three match points, sealed the victory. “It was really important not to let her get away in the second set – to stay close, serve well, and look for opportunities to break,” said Tomljanovic, visibly emotional after the win.
The statistics from the clash between Ajla Tomljanovic and Iva Jovic reveal the intensity of the contest, with Jovic committing five double faults, while Tomljanovic stood out with a serve percentage of 76% and only one double fault.
With Jovic’s elimination, the competition in Austin now has only one remaining seed. Kimberly Birrell, an Australian player, secured her place in the semifinals by defeating Caroline Dolehide with a clear 6-4, 6-2. Birrell started strong, but the match became balanced before she managed to close it out with a run of three consecutive games.
The day also brought more surprises, with seed Peyton Stearns securing her spot in the final stages after a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kaja Juvan. The first set was a breeze for Stearns, who completely dominated her opponent, while the second set posed some challenge, but it was not enough to prevent her victory.
Another standout player was Ashlyn Krueger, who overcame Anastasia Zakharova in an intense battle, with a final score of 7-5, 6-3. Krueger, despite starting the set down, managed to rally and close out the match with a solid performance.
With emotions running high and surprises in abundance, the competition in Austin promises more twists as the players prepare for the semifinals. The tournament is becoming increasingly exciting, and tennis fans won’t want to miss what’s coming next!
