Manchester United faces a colossal bill following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, revealing that the total cost of his short and tumultuous tenure at the club could exceed an impressive £15.9 million. The Portuguese manager was removed from his position last month, with a year and a half remaining on his contract, and the club’s financial situation is beginning to emerge through a statement made to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Amorim, who found himself grappling with one of the worst campaigns in Manchester United’s history, not only saw his career in the Premier League fade but may also enjoy significant compensation. The club, in an effort to clarify the situation, disclosed that the compensation to Amorim, which includes the five members of his coaching staff who accompanied him, could be reduced if the manager secures a new job before receiving the full amount.

The generosity of the compensation does not end there. United also recorded a depreciation of £6.3 million in its accounts, relating to the cost of bringing Amorim from Sporting CP, which amounted to around €11 million. This investment, which was supposed to revitalize the team, ultimately turned out to be one of many management errors under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The era of Amorim at Manchester United was marked by disappointing performance, culminating in the team’s worst finish in over fifty years: a dismal 15th place. With only 24 wins in 63 matches, fans and the club’s management demanded urgent change. Since his departure, the new manager, Michael Carrick, has already led the team to five victories in six games, demonstrating a clear improvement in performance.

In its statement, Manchester United mentioned: “On January 5, 2026, the club announced that Ruben Amorim has left his position as head coach of the men’s team with immediate effect, along with several members of his coaching staff. A cost of £6.3 million for the amortization of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential amount of future payments, will be recognized in the profit or loss statement during the second half of the year ending June 30, 2026.”

The dimensions of this financial scandal only serve to highlight the urgent need for a reassessment of the recruitment and management strategies of Manchester United, which is trying to reclaim its former glory. The hopes for a revival at the club now rest in the hands of Carrick, who has already demonstrated his ability to deliver results, while the ghosts of the Amorim era still haunt the halls of Old Trafford.
