Inter Milan continues to make headlines in the football world, and the recent statements from sporting director Piero Ausilio about Cristian Chivu reveal an unwavering confidence in the Romanian coach’s abilities. During an interview with Marco Nosotti, Ausilio made it clear that Chivu has always been the club’s priority to replace Simone Inzaghi, and not Cesc Fabregas, as many had speculated.
“The respect I have for this coach is enormous,” Ausilio stated, highlighting Chivu’s journey, who returned to San Siro as the head coach after a brief stint at Parma. Chivu’s appointment comes after Inzaghi’s departure, who moved to Al-Hilal at the end of last season. Contrary to speculation, Ausilio assures that the club’s preference has always been for the former defender, who is now thriving as a coach. “When we faced the choice of Inzaghi, we put some ideas on the table, and Chivu’s was the one we believed in the most, for a thousand reasons. He is an incredible man,” he said.
In his first season in charge, Chivu is on the verge of winning the Scudetto, leading Serie A with a comfortable ten-point advantage over AC Milan, with just 12 games remaining. “We are extremely happy with the decision to have Chivu as our coach,” Ausilio added, emphasizing the coach’s courage in taking on the challenge of leading the team.
Ausilio also spoke about Lautaro Martinez, one of his best deals. “I remember that period perfectly. It was a difficult time for Inter. He was leaning towards joining Atlético de Madrid, but I took the risk,” he revealed, referring to the moment he decided to sign the Argentine player. “What I achieved, with Milito’s help, was a beneficial deal that did not exceed 20 million euros.”
The director also recalled other players who left a mark on the club’s history, such as Kovacic and Bonucci, and the impact of players who arrived at the club for free, like Mkhitaryan and Calhanoglu. “Free transfers may not seem advantageous, but their performances on the pitch speak for themselves. We were in a rebuilding phase, but the project was a winning one,” he stated.
Ausilio did not hesitate to comment on the arrival of Hakan Calhanoglu in 2021, highlighting the speed with which the club reacted to Eriksen’s situation. “In 48 hours, we seized the opportunity, and we are happy to have him with us,” he said, reflecting on the importance of quick and strategic decisions in the world of football.
With a firm gaze towards the future, Inter Milan appears to be in good hands under the leadership of Cristian Chivu, who, according to Ausilio, is not only a talented coach but someone who embodies the values and ambition of the club. The story of Inter continues to be written, and the next chapter may very well be the conquest of another title under the guidance of their chosen coach.
