“Abel Ferreira sent off in Palmeiras’ victory – reaction to the assistant referee.”

Abel Ferreira, the charismatic Portuguese coach of Palmeiras, has once again become the center of attention following his expulsion during the match against Fluminense, which ended in a 2-1 victory for his team. The incident occurred at the end of the game when, instead of celebrating the lead in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Ferreira found himself in a heated discussion with the officiating team, led by referee Felipe Fernandes de Lima.

The moment that sparked controversy happened when Abel Ferreira approached the officiating team to contest a decision he deemed unfair: a throw-in that, according to him, should have been awarded to Palmeiras. In statements at the press conference, Ferreira did not hold back in his criticism of the fourth official, stating that the expulsion was completely disproportionate. “We are in the last minute of the game and there is a throw-in for us, the referee gives it to them, I complain. I did complain, yes. Just as I complained about a ball that was a goal kick and he changed it to a corner. VAR does not intervene in that,” he declared, highlighting his frustration.

The coach did not hesitate to point fingers at the fourth official, suggesting that he felt offended by his complaint. “I think the fourth official must have been upset because the throw-in was ours and it was the fourth official who expelled me,” he added, emphasizing his indignation with the situation.

The referee’s report, cited by TNT Sports, revealed that tension was in the air: Ferreira, in a moment of desperation, questioned assistant Fernanda Gomes Antunes and fourth official Luiz Augusto Tisne: “Are you blind? Didn’t you see that the throw-in was for our team?” Such statements only highlighted his frustration, making it clear that he was unwilling to accept what he considered an injustice.

Furthermore, Ferreira recalled a previous sending-off that also sparked controversy. “In the last game, I was sent off for applauding. If I can’t do that in a stadium, where am I supposed to applaud?” This remark not only reveals his combative spirit but also his ongoing struggle against decisions he deems wrong.

Regarding the match, Palmeiras managed to score two quick goals, with Vítor Roque and Allan putting the team ahead within the first 15 minutes. However, Lucho Acosta reduced the deficit for Fluminense in the 40th minute, keeping the adrenaline high. This clash between two teams vying for the top of the table was undoubtedly a true battle.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Abel Ferreira has faced disciplinary sanctions this season. The coach had already been sent off in a previous match against Corinthians in the Campeonato Paulista, and is now awaiting judgment. The situation raises questions about how referees handle the intense emotions of football and the need for more open dialogue between players, coaches, and the officiating team. Ferreira’s future at the helm of Palmeiras may depend not only on his tactics on the pitch but also on his ability to manage his own conduct on the sidelines.
