Alexander Zverev, one of the most prominent names in world tennis, is on the brink of an unprecedented crisis in the ATP rankings. After nearly two years of not dropping below fourth place, the German now faces the imminent possibility of a dramatic fall in his standings following a disappointing performance at the Mexico Open. His journey in the tournament, which was once crowned with a title in 2021, has turned into a true disaster.
Zverev’s nightmare in Acapulco culminated in a defeat at the hands of Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, who stunned everyone by winning the match with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), marking his first victory against a top-five player. “I feel amazing, especially because it has been a couple of tough years,” Kecmanovic, currently ranked 84th, stated. “I’m happy that things are finally going my way.”
Kecmanovic, who displayed remarkable aggression throughout the match, added: “I served much better than usual, so I’m glad that things went well today. Obviously, he was the big favorite, so I had no pressure, but you have to play well when it matters, close out the match, and fortunately, everything went in my favor.”
Zverev, who won the Mexico Open title in 2021 by defeating Taylor Fritz, has seen his career crumble since then. The following year, he was disqualified before his second-round match due to an unfortunate incident during the doubles competition, where he verbally abused the umpire and repeatedly struck the official’s chair with his racket. Since then, his presence in the tournament has been marked by a series of early exits, including a first-round loss in 2023 and second-round exits in 2025 and 2026.
Currently, Zverev, with 4,555 points, occupies a precarious position, just 705 points ahead of Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is in ninth place. His closest competitors, such as Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton, are putting intense pressure on him, jeopardizing his place among the top ten. Canadian Auger-Aliassime remains in contention at the Dubai Tennis Championships and has the chance to rise to sixth place if he wins the title.
As the decisive stage of the Indian Wells Open approaches, Zverev needs to quickly regain his form and confidence, or he may face a drop that could drastically alter the course of his career. Time is running out, and expectations are high. What will the German do to reverse this streak of bad luck? One thing is certain: the tennis world is closely watching the developments of his career.
