FIFA announces radical changes to the rules of the World Cup.

Football, one of the most loved and followed sports worldwide, is about to undergo a radical transformation that could change the way we watch games. FIFA, through the International Football Association Board (IFAB), is preparing a series of significant changes aimed at combating time-wasting and making the game faster and more dynamic. The proposals, revealed by ESPN, will be discussed at the annual general meeting taking place next Saturday in Wales.

One of the most impactful changes under discussion is the acceleration of the restart of play after interruptions. For throw-ins and goal kicks, players will have only five seconds to put the ball back into play. If a player deliberately delays this process, the referee may initiate a visible countdown, signaling with their hand. If the time limit is exceeded on a throw-in, possession will be transferred to the opposing team. In the case of goal kicks, the infraction will result in a corner kick for the opponent. This rule is inspired by the already known eight-second limitations for goalkeepers, who must quickly put the ball back into play, with the last five seconds also being signaled by the referee.

Substitutions, which often turn into true circuses, are also under the scrutiny of the IFAB. To combat players’ slow exits, those who take more than ten seconds to leave the field may see their team playing with a numerical disadvantage for at least a minute, as the substitution will not be authorized immediately. This measure aims to ensure that the game remains fluid and exciting, avoiding time-wasting that frustrates both players and fans.

Injuries are also being analyzed. A player requiring medical assistance will have to remain off the field for a period of up to one minute before being allowed to return. However, goalkeeper injuries will continue to be treated as an exception, allowing them to return to the game more quickly if necessary.

Additionally, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) may see its functions expanded. Saturday’s meeting could determine that VAR will intervene in decisions regarding corner kicks and in situations resulting in a second yellow card, thus increasing its relevance during matches.

FIFA is undoubtedly preparing a scenario that could revolutionize football as we know it. These changes aim not only to speed up the game but also to make it fairer and more exciting for everyone involved. What remains to be seen is how teams and players will adapt to these new rules and whether fans will be ready to embrace this new era of football.
