Carlos Carvalhal, the Portuguese coach, did not shy away from the controversy surrounding the match between Benfica and Real Madrid in the first leg of the playoff for access to the knockout stage of the Champions League. The controversy arose after allegations of racist insults directed at Vinícius Júnior, a Real Madrid player, by the Argentine Prestianni. In statements to the Spanish newspaper AS, Carvalhal made it clear that the situation requires careful and impartial analysis.
“Until now, there has been no incident. I asked my colleagues for their opinion about him and they said he was a good guy, that he had no incidents of this kind. I was commenting on the game and said more or less this: first, we must be against any act of racism, regardless of who it is against; second, I think it’s time for a UEFA tribunal to explain what happened (in addition to the provisional suspension); lastly, I am in favor of the presumption of innocence in this and all cases. If it is proven that it was racism, Prestianni must be severely punished,” Carvalhal stated, expressing his concern about the seriousness of the accusation and the reputation of the young player.
The coach emphasized the importance of addressing the issue fairly, stating: “I start from the principle that both sides are telling the truth. I am not here to create any kind of doubt. Simply, there are two versions. Unfortunately, the cameras do not prove which one is true.” Carvalhal reflected deeply on the consequences of a hasty condemnation, warning that “if it is not true, we are condemning a young prodigy of 20 years to have a big problem for the rest of his life, without it being true.”
Tension at the Estádio da Luz increased after the match, where Real Madrid won 1-0, with Vinícius Júnior scoring the only goal of the game. After the goal, the Brazilian forward claimed to have been the target of racist insults, which led the French referee François Letexier to halt the game and activate the anti-racism protocol. The match resumed nearly 10 minutes later, but the controversy continued to resonate on social media and in the sports press.
After the final whistle, Prestianni categorically denied having made any racist insults against Vinícius Júnior, while other Real Madrid players confirmed the offense. Both teams are now preparing for the second leg of the playoff, scheduled for this Wednesday at 8:00 PM, where expectations are high and the atmosphere tense. The issue of racism in sports remains a delicate and essential topic for discussion, and Carvalhal’s words resonate as a call for caution and justice in handling such allegations.
