“Journalist makes a serious mistake in reaction to Gianluca Prestianni’s suspension by UEFA.”

The situation in the football world is heating up, especially after the UEFA launched an investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at Vinicius Jr., the forward of Real Madrid. This shocking incident occurred during the first leg of the Champions League playoff against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz, and it now generates controversy not only for what happened but also for the reactions that followed.

After Vinicius Jr. scored a goal that put his team ahead, the Argentine player Gianluca Prestianni was accused by the Brazilian of making a racial insinuation, covering his mouth with his shirt to utter an insult. The seriousness of the situation led UEFA to suspend Prestianni for the return leg scheduled for February 25. The decision was generally well received, but not without criticism from some sectors of the press.

Raúl Varela, editor of the La Tribu program on Radio Marca, made quite controversial comments regarding the suspension. He argued that the decision could benefit Real Madrid, suggesting that the measure is questionable since Prestianni has not yet been proven guilty. “What is clear is that, in terms of chronology, things did not go wrong for Madrid. On the contrary. And he concluded with a rather graphic statement from a competitive standpoint: A player who is neither definitively guilty nor innocent misses the game, and from a competitive and narrative perspective, it can be considered a 1-0 defeat,” Varela said.

These statements provoke outrage, especially given that Prestianni’s behavior was witnessed by other players from Real Madrid. Covering the mouth to utter words implies that lip-reading experts cannot be used, but it is expected that a pitch-side microphone may have captured what was said. Vinicius Jr.’s reaction does not suggest that he misinterpreted the situation.

UEFA has a history of dealing with incidents of racism, such as the case of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, who was accused of racism against Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in 2012. Following an investigation, Suarez was punished, and the incident resulted in a tense situation between the two players, culminating in Suarez’s refusal to shake Evra’s hand before a subsequent match. It is possible that UEFA considered this precedent when deciding to suspend Prestianni, anticipating the potential problems that could arise on the pitch.

Most experts agree that the suspension is the correct decision, but Varela’s defense seems to be setting a dangerous precedent. Ignoring the seriousness of the allegations of racism and focusing solely on competitive aspects is a line of reasoning that could have dire consequences in the future.

Football should be a space of respect and inclusion, and the response to incidents of racism must be firm. Controversial statements like those made by Varela not only undermine the seriousness of the situation but can also encourage a culture of impunity in the sport. UEFA is doing what is necessary to address the issue of racism, and it is crucial that everyone involved in football supports this fight.
