A single phone call was enough to put an end to Manchester United’s aspirations to sign what many consider to be the “best left-back in the world.” The revelation, which comes from a recent report, exposes not only the frustration of the Red Devils but also the intense dynamics surrounding transfers in modern football.
It is widely recognized that Manchester United plans to invest heavily in the midfield during the upcoming transfer window, with expectations of at least one, if not two, significant signings. However, the club’s fans should not dismiss the possibility of a substantial investment in other positions, namely the left side of the defense. In recent days, rumors have emerged regarding United’s concrete interest in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, as well as the need to strengthen the attack with an experienced forward, especially if Joshua Zirkzee is transferred.
Currently, United’s options for the left-back position include Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, and Tyrell Malacia, but each has its own limitations. Shaw, who has passed the age of 30, faces the inevitability of physical decline, while Dorgu, with a predominantly offensive talent, may soon be adapted to a winger position. Malacia, on the other hand, is scheduled to leave as his contract is set to expire soon.
In this context, Manchester United has placed its hopes on Federico Dimarco, a left-back for Inter Milan, who had an impressive season scoring six goals and providing 15 assists in Serie A. At 28 years old, Dimarco is not only a versatile player capable of playing as a winger but has also shown defensive solidity, making him a viable option for a more traditional defensive line.
Dimarco’s impact at Inter is undeniable, having been named to the last two Serie A Team of the Season selections and playing a crucial role in his team’s journey to two Champions League finals in the past three years. For Manchester United, the prospect of securing the Italian international for around 50 million euros seemed like a feasible dream, with scouts sent to observe Dimarco during Inter’s clash against Juventus on February 14, where he assisted one of the goals.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s hopes were abruptly dashed when, according to reports from the Italian newspaper L’Interista, the club’s interest was summarily rejected. The report reveals that “the interest from Manchester United? Everyone would like to see Dimarco up close.” Furthermore, the publication states that Inter Milan and Dimarco are in negotiations for a new contract that is expected to extend his stay at the club until 2030, even though his current deal does not expire until 2027. The same applies to the player’s willingness to leave Inter, which clearly has no intentions of allowing his departure.
With this turn of events, Manchester United finds itself forced to seek alternatives in the market to strengthen its left-back position for the upcoming season. The search for the “best left-back in the world” has proven to be a challenge, and time will tell what the club’s new strategies will be to bolster its defense.
