Napoli goalkeeper criticizes referee and VAR: ‘today’s football is a farce’

Following a bitter 2-1 defeat to Atalanta, Napoli’s third-choice goalkeeper, Nikita Contini, did not hold back and took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with the referee’s decisions, launching a fierce critique of the current state of football. “What a farce modern football is,” Contini exclaimed, in a clear outburst of indignation that resonated with the club’s supporters.

The match, held in Bergamo, left Luciano Spalletti’s men with a sour taste in their mouths, not only due to the loss but also because of how the game was officiated. The first half saw a penalty that was revoked after a VAR intervention, and Napoli’s second goal was disallowed for a foul by Rasmus Hojlund on Isak Hien, decisions that sparked outrage among players and club management. Giovanni Manna, Napoli’s sporting director, felt compelled to defend the team at the post-match press conference, openly criticizing the performance of the officiating team.

“Nightly reflection. How beautiful true football was,” Contini wrote on his social media, lamenting the loss of the game’s essence. “Real conflicts, true tackles, genuine insults, and fans who could travel anywhere. And the list goes on. I could go on, and it wouldn’t just be a little. What a farce modern football is. Football is a serious matter; otherwise, we might as well dance.” His words resonate as a cry of revolt that captures the discontent of many who, like him, long for a return to the authenticity of the sport.

In addition to the controversies on the field, the match was also marked by the absence of Napoli fans, who were prevented from purchasing tickets for the game following a series of incidents that resulted in a travel ban for away games until the end of the season. This decision by the Italian authorities comes after violent clashes between fans during previous away matches, leading to a tightening of security rules in football.

With this defeat, Napoli remains in third place in the table, tied with Roma on 50 points and four points ahead of Juventus, making the title race even more intense. The atmosphere of tension and frustration is palpable, both on and off the pitch, as the team tries to navigate a championship that, according to Contini, is losing its luster. The indignation of players and fans may be a sign that something needs to change before football becomes, in fact, a mere farce.
