The meteoric rise of Alex Eala in the world of tennis continues to be a topic of conversation, with acclaimed American player Jessica Pegula joining the wave of praise directed at the young Filipina and her army of fervent fans. Eala, who exploded into notoriety during the 2025 season, captured the public’s attention by delivering a series of impressive victories at the Miami Open, where she defeated big names such as Jeļena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek, reaching the semifinals of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament.
Although her journey in Miami was halted by Pegula, Eala’s impact was undeniable, as she became the first Filipina player to enter the top 100 of the WTA rankings. The historic achievement did not stop there; in the same year, Eala made history again by winning her opening match at the US Open, further solidifying her place in sports history as the first woman from the Philippines to secure a victory in a major tournament.
The young prodigy not only reached her first high-level final, finishing as the runner-up at the Eastbourne Open in June last year, but also achieved an impressive peak in the rankings, reaching the 50th position before the end of the season. Her progress did not stop in 2026, where, despite being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships against Coco Gauff, Eala continued to draw crowds at every tournament she competed in.
Spectators at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre cheered in unison at every appearance of Eala, and figures like Gauff and Amanda Anisimova did not hesitate to express their admiration for the Filipino player. Pegula, who defeated Elina Svitolina in the WTA 1000 final, was asked about Eala’s rise and the support from her fans, and she had nothing but praise: “Alex is amazing. The way she can fill stadiums and how her country supports her is something special. She handles all of this so maturely and with such grace. It’s admirable to see how she appreciates all the support she receives.”
Pegula also recalled her experience playing against Eala in Miami: “The crowd was all on her side. I kept wondering: ‘Where did all these people come from?’ With each tournament, as she establishes herself as a really good player on the circuit, fans come out in force to support her.” She referred to the recent tournament in Australia, where Eala, due to her popularity, was placed on a court that was too small for the size of the crowd she attracted.
Hearing the applause and cheers echoing from the hotel, Pegula emphasized the importance of what Eala is doing for the sport. “She is a perfect role model. I’m sure she wants to inspire Filipino girls to play tennis and pursue their dreams. That’s just fantastic for the sport,” concluded Pegula, reiterating the young athlete’s relevance in the growth and popularization of tennis in the Philippines.
Alex Eala, the new tennis star, is not just about winning on the court; she is redefining what it means to be a passionate and resilient athlete, serving as a source of inspiration for many. The future looks bright for this young prospect, who promises to continue making her mark in the world of sports.
