Iga Swiatek, the star of Polish tennis, is facing a turbulent period in her career, with criticism emerging unexpectedly. Since her last victory in Seoul in September, the young prodigy has not advanced beyond the quarter-finals in significant tournaments. Her recent performances, including an early exit at the Australian Open at the hands of Elena Rybakina and a defeat at the WTA 1000 in Doha against Maria Sakkari, have raised concerns among fans and experts.
In this tense atmosphere, Artur Szostaczko, Swiatek’s first coach who discovered her talent, launched sharp criticisms regarding the athlete’s dependence on her psychologist, Daria Abramowicz. “I don’t know any female tennis player who spends day and night with a psychologist. They are together on holidays, at tournaments, even watching movies. Iga depends on her a lot. If that works for Swiatek, fine, but it’s surprising,” Szostaczko stated during a Polish podcast, Trzeci Serwis.
The debate did not stop there. Lechem Sidorem, the podcast host, added that in the matches in Melbourne and Doha, it was unclear whether Daria Abramowicz was providing the necessary support to calm the player. “Iga is very nervous; she doesn’t have a communication mechanism, like sign language. The public perception of this relationship is changing,” Sidorem stated, suggesting that the connection between Swiatek and Abramowicz may not be yielding the expected results.
These statements did not sit well with the player’s team. Swiatek’s father, Tomasz, did not hesitate to defend his daughter, attacking critics on social media: “What have you two achieved? Almost nothing, mind your own lives. You have no idea what you are talking about!” he said, expressing his discontent and advocating for the bond between his daughter and her psychologist.
The spotlight is now on Iga Swiatek, who, despite being the current world number two and a former number one, is facing a critical phase in her career. With six Grand Slam titles to her name, the Polish player is under pressure to maintain her status and the confidence of her supporters while navigating criticism that could shake her emotional and competitive stability. The champion’s future is at stake, and everyone is eagerly awaiting her next moves.
