Sporting CP faces a challenging start to the year filled with misfortunes that puts the team in trouble both in terms of performance and health. Coach Rui Borges, in particular, is experiencing a true déjà vu, recalling the nightmare of injuries that plagued the club last season. With a new year that should bring hope, the reality is quite different and bitter for the Lions, who were forced to draw with Gil Vicente (1-1) in the 17th round of the league and suffer a heartbreaking defeat against Vitória de Guimarães (1-2) in the semi-final of the Allianz Cup.
The preparation for the clash with the Guimarães side turned out to be a real battlefield. The squad already had ten unavailable players: five injured (Quenda, Debast, Blopa, Ricardo Mangas, and Pedro Gonçalves), two recovering fitness (Daniel Bragança and Nuno Santos), two absent due to participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (Diomande and Catamo), and one suspended (Gonçalo Inácio). The situation worsened during the match when the Performance Unit had to deal with two more significant absences.
Fotis Ioannidis, after feeling discomfort in his knee, was forced to leave the field in the 22nd minute, although his injury does not appear to be serious and his presence in the next game against Casa Pia, scheduled for the 16th, is not at risk. However, the situation of Eduardo Quaresma is much more concerning. The defender, after a violent clash with Samu in the 62nd minute, left the pitch on a stretcher and was immediately admitted to Santo André Hospital, where he underwent surgery on his zygomatic bone. The forecast is for a recovery period of up to three weeks, a significant blow for the Lions’ defense.
The reactions to the clinical state of the squad have been intense, with the Performance Unit under the spotlight. Rui Borges did not hesitate to highlight that, although the muscle injuries affecting Ricardo Mangas and Pedro Gonçalves are only two, many of the other issues are of a traumatic nature and, therefore, uncontrollable. Among the traumatic injuries, Quenda, Ioannidis, Nuno Santos, Eduardo Quaresma, Debast, and Daniel Bragança stand out, with the latter recently making his first appearance on the substitutes’ bench after a long absence of 11 months.
In a statement filled with frustration, Rui Borges commented: “Sad, Sporting seems like a case study. We came out with two more injuries [Eduardo Quaresma and Ioannidis], everything has been happening to us.” This situation is not new for the coach, who, since taking over in December 2024, has never been able to count on all available players. The lack of resources has led to young players from the B team, such as Salvador Blopa and Flávio Gonçalves, being promoted to fill gaps in the first team, with even Luís Guilherme making his debut just two days after being officially announced as a winter signing.
The atmosphere within the team is tense, and Rui Borges did not hesitate to speak about the “accumulated fatigue and lack of energy” affecting his players. With the first half of the league already concluded and Sporting seven points behind leaders FC Porto, the pressure is mounting, especially after failing to secure two trophies: the Supertaça and the Allianz Cup.
The situation at Sporting is alarming and raises questions about the club’s ability to respond to this whirlwind of injuries. What will the lions do to rise again and fight for a place at the top of the table? The answer seems urgent as time runs out and challenges multiply.
