Fofana and Mejbri Victims of Racial Abuse: A Warning for Society

After yet another lamentable episode of racism in football, players Hannibal Mejbri of Burnley and Wesley Fofana of Chelsea did not hesitate to express their outrage on social media. Both were subjected to racial abuse following the 1-1 draw between their teams in the Premier League, an event that highlights the persistence of racism in sports, even in 2026.

Fofana, the French defender who received a red card for accumulating yellow cards in the match, shared several screenshots of offensive messages he received on Instagram. In a powerful post, he stated: “2026, same old story, nothing changes. These people are never punished. Big campaigns are created against racism, but no one really does anything.” His words resonate with the frustration of many who are hoping for real and effective change in attitudes towards racism.

On the other hand, Mejbri, the Tunisian international, also spoke out. He posted an image of an offensive message and, in another post, made a clear appeal: “It’s 2026 and there are still people like this. Educate yourselves and your children, please.” His statements reinforce the urgent need for education and awareness to combat this scourge.

Chelsea quickly reacted, expressing that they are “shocked and disgusted” by the “vile” abuse directed at Fofana. The club stated: “Behaviors like this are completely unacceptable and go against the values of the game and everything we stand for as a club. There is no room for racism.” The organization reiterated its full support for Fofana and all players who face this type of hatred simply for doing their job. Chelsea affirmed that they will cooperate with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible and take the most severe possible measures.

Similarly, Burnley strongly condemned the abuse. In a statement, the club expressed that they are “disgusted” by what happened and that they have already reported the incident to Meta, the parent company of Instagram. They expect strong support from the platform, the Premier League, and the police, ensuring that they will work tirelessly to identify and investigate the perpetrator of the offenses. “There is no place for this in our society, and we condemn it without reservation. Hannibal will receive all the support from the club and Burnley fans, who have already shown their outrage at the abuse. There is no room for racism.”

The Premier League also issued a statement, asserting that any individual identified and found guilty of discrimination will face the most severe consequences, including club bans and legal action. This incident is just another in the long list of racial abuse that players have faced this season, following a UEFA investigation into racial abuse directed at Vinicius Jr of Real Madrid during a Champions League match.

Previous cases, such as those involving Joe Willock of Newcastle and Mathys Tel of Tottenham, demonstrate that the problem is persistent and that the fight against racism in football is far from over. BBC Sport has already reached out to Meta for a response on this matter.

The fight against racism in sport requires a collective and ongoing effort. The statements from Fofana and Mejbri are a wake-up call that education and action are essential to eradicate this unacceptable behavior. Sport should be a field of equality and respect, and it is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that this becomes a reality.
