Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis prodigy, did not hold back in commenting on the surprising defeat of Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Qatar Open. The tournament, widely anticipated as a chance for an exciting showdown between the two young stars, saw Sinner, ranked 16th in the world, eliminated by Jakub Mensik. Alcaraz, on the other hand, advanced to the final after a solid victory over 2025 Doha champion Andrey Rublev, with scores of 7-6(3), 6-4. He is now preparing to face Arthur Fils, who defeated Mensik in the other semi-final.

In a press conference after securing his first final at the Qatar Open, Alcaraz was asked about matching Sinner’s achievement of 66 weeks as the world number one. The 22-year-old, who has already won seven Grand Slam titles, did not hesitate to express his satisfaction with this milestone. “Well, it’s going to be a big number, obviously,” he began. “One of my goals is to stay at the top for as long as possible and try to play finals in every tournament, which I am really happy to have achieved in the last tournaments.”

Alcaraz’s current position in the ATP rankings is impressive, having remained at the top for 15 of the last 24 weeks since winning the US Open in September. Sinner, on the other hand, held the number one spot for just one week in November. Alcaraz reflected on his significant points lead, but emphasized the importance of staying focused: “I’m happy to see myself with a big lead in points, but I will still try to keep my focus on that.”

Sinner’s defeat was not only a disappointment for his fans, but also surprised Alcaraz. “I mean, I was surprised, I won’t lie, I was surprised that Jannik lost. But at the same time, I know what players are capable of,” he said. He highlighted the unpredictable nature of tennis, where players like Mensik can be extremely dangerous on a good day, although they often struggle with the consistency required to maintain that level over time. “When they have a good day, they are really, really dangerous and can beat anyone, including me. So, I was surprised in a way, but at the same time, I wasn’t at all.”

With the Qatar Open final in sight, Alcaraz is determined to continue his rise and solidify his position as one of the best tennis players today. The rivalry with Sinner promises to be one of the most exciting on the circuit, and the next stage of this epic duel will be closely watched by fans and experts in the world of tennis.
