How many points do Real Madrid and Barcelona need to win LaLiga?

The race for the La Liga title is heating up, and the tension between Barcelona and Real Madrid has never been more palpable! With just two points separating the Spanish giants and 14 matches still to play, the battle promises to be one of the most exciting in football history. The only way for either club not to secure the championship would be a dramatic and unexpected collapse, something that seems hard to imagine at this moment.

Currently, Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal occupy the remaining spots in the top four, but they are a distant 15 points behind Real Madrid and 13 points behind Barcelona. This means that, unless an epic turnaround occurs, La Liga will undoubtedly end up in the hands of one of the two titans of Spanish football. Historically, Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the league, with 18 of the last 20 titles being claimed by these two clubs.

Despite the ups and downs that have characterized Real Madrid’s season, the team is performing solidly in La Liga, amassing 60 points after 24 matches—a feat that has only been surpassed twice in the 21st century at this stage of the season. With an impressive average of 2.5 points per game, the Merengues are on track to finish the season with 95 points, the same tally that secured them the title in the 2023-24 season.

On the other hand, Barcelona has an average of 2.42 points per game, which would lead them to a total of 92 points by the end of the season. This number would be a positive milestone, representing their best campaign since the 2017-18 season, but it may not be enough to secure the title. In the last three championships they won, Barcelona needed only 87 or 88 points to lift the trophy. Between 2009 and 2018, the team frequently finished the season with over 90 points, but they have not reached that mark in the last seven seasons.

If Real Madrid continues with its current performance, it is likely that Barcelona will need a total of points in the 90s, if not the high 90s, to stay ahead in the standings. With Hansi Flick’s team having been in great form for most of the season, the recent loss to Girona could prove to be a decisive turning point, especially after Real Madrid secured a victory against Real Sociedad last weekend.

Regardless of the outcome, we are about to witness one of the best title races in modern La Liga between these two powerhouses. With both clubs projecting a season finish with over 90 points, the next El Clasico, scheduled for May, could be the clash that decides who will be crowned champion. Stay tuned, because every game counts and the title fight is far from over!
