Virgil van Dijk, the charismatic captain of Liverpool, made an emotional appeal to his “good friend” Mohamed Salah, urging him to stay at Anfield for the next season. Both players are approaching the final year of their contracts, raising questions about the future of the iconic duo.
Salah, who went through a tumultuous period in December due to a public disagreement with manager Arne Slot, was benched for the first time in his Liverpool career, sparking rumors of a possible departure in January. However, after a late agreement, the Egyptian returned to the starting lineup, having started every match since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite his presence on the pitch, speculation about Salah’s future continues to loom over the club. If the management fails to secure a new contract, this summer will be the last opportunity for Liverpool to capitalize on a transfer for the 33-year-old player. Van Dijk, who is also in the same contractual situation after extending his deal for two more years in April, expressed his hope that Salah will stay: “Mo is like me – he has another year [on his contract], so we’ll see,” Van Dijk stated after Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
“I always want Mo to stay because I am a good friend of his and we have been through highs and lows together – I don’t want to call them lows – for many years. Mo is a very important player for Liverpool, who has set an extremely high standard. For us, nothing has changed. There are many things that people don’t see that are important to becoming a successful team. We will see how the rest of the season goes and how important he can still be.”
Coach Arne Slot has already shown that he is considering a future without Salah, as Liverpool has remained unbeaten in ten Premier League matches in which the Egyptian did not start, but only won four of those encounters. Slot’s open style of play in the early months of the season was criticized, leading him to adopt a more cautious approach and control possession, which has proven problematic as opponents often set up in defensive blocks.
Dominik Szoboszlai has frequently been called upon to replace Salah on the right wing, but having shown exceptional performance in midfield, Slot may be considering keeping him in the center. The lack of confidence in Federico Chiesa as a starter and the inconsistent performances of Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha make it clear that Salah’s potential departure will require the signing of a new winger.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is already preparing for a future without Van Dijk, although this may pose a considerable challenge. The Dutch central defender, who will turn 35 this summer, remains crucial to the team, having started 37 of the 39 games this season, accumulating an impressive 3,330 minutes on the pitch. “Vital” is the word that Slot often uses to describe his captain.
The transition to a Liverpool without Van Dijk will be painful, especially if Ibrahima Konaté decides to leave the club this summer. However, the management has already taken steps forward, having signed Giovanni Leoni last year as a promising talent for the future. The young Italian, who was expected to use this season to learn alongside Van Dijk and Konaté, saw his plans ruined by an anterior cruciate ligament injury. To mitigate this situation, Liverpool acquired Jérémy Jacquet in January, a talented Frenchman who will benefit from at least 12 months of learning alongside Van Dijk before joining the team next season.
With uncertainties looming over the futures of Salah and Van Dijk, Liverpool fans are eager to see how the team will adapt to these changes and the impact this will have on their quest for glory in the Premier League and European competitions. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of these iconic players and, by extension, that of Liverpool itself.
