The FA Cup experienced a Saturday full of emotions, with Liverpool and Newcastle securing their spots in the round of 16 after convincing victories. Liverpool, playing at home, dominated Brighton with a resounding 3-0, while Newcastle overcame Aston Villa with an impressive comeback, finishing the match 3-1.
The “Reds” displayed a solid performance, highlighted by goals from Curtis Jones in the 42nd minute, Dominik Szoboszlai in the 56th, and the ever-lethal Mohamed Salah, who sealed the victory with a penalty in the 68th minute. The comfortable scoreline allowed coach Arne Slot to make some changes, giving young talents the opportunity to shine under the spotlight.
On the other hand, Newcastle faced a different challenge. Aston Villa started strong, with Tammy Abraham scoring in the 14th minute, but the red card shown to Bizot at the end of the first half, in the 45+1 minute, changed the course of the game. From that point on, the “Magpies” showed their grit and determination. Italian Sandro Tonali was the true hero of the match, scoring two crucial goals in the 63rd and 76th minutes, before Woltemade secured the victory with a goal in the 88th minute.
In another thrilling match, West Ham, managed by Nuno Espírito Santo, secured a hard-fought victory over third-tier Burton, decided in the final minutes of extra time with a goal from Summerville in the 95th minute. Meanwhile, Manchester City, without the presence of Portuguese players Rúben Dias, Matheus Nunes, and Bernardo Silva, fulfilled their obligation by triumphing 2-0 against fourth division Salford City.
However, the day’s biggest surprise was the elimination of Burnley, who are struggling in the Premier League, after being defeated 2-1 by League One’s Mansfield Town. In clashes between second-tier teams, Southampton achieved a thrilling victory over Leicester after extra time, while Norwich defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-1.
The FA Cup journey still promises more surprises, with highlights including Fulham, managed by Portuguese Marco Silva, visiting Stoke, and Arsenal hosting Wigan. The competition continues to prove unpredictable and full of excitement, keeping fans eager for more twists and outstanding performances.
