The transfer of Dayot Upamecano to Bayern Munich has been a hot topic in the football world, especially for giants like Liverpool and Real Madrid, who saw the French defender as a golden opportunity to strengthen their defenses. However, the player’s recent contract extension with the Bavarian club, which runs until 2030, forces both clubs to reassess their defensive recruitment strategies.
The French centre-back, who was just six months away from a contract expiration, saw his situation resolved after Bayern, led by sporting director Christoph Freund, allegedly issued an ultimatum during negotiations. Freund praised Upamecano, describing him as “the complete package,” which explains the fierce interest the player attracted as a potential free agent.
With the need for a defensive rebuild, both Liverpool and Real Madrid require viable alternatives. Liverpool, the current Premier League champions, faces uncertainty regarding the future of Virgil van Dijk, who is approaching 35 years old, and the fitness of Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract is also nearing its end. Joe Gomez, whose form has been inconsistent, and young Giovanni Leoni, who is sidelined due to injury, are the remaining options, making the situation even more critical.
Similarly, Real Madrid finds itself at a crossroads. Antonio Rüdiger is heading towards a contract that expires this year and faces injury issues, while David Alaba, who is still recovering from a serious injury, is also nearing the end of his contract. Clearly, “Los Blancos'” defense urgently needs reinforcements.
As both teams look to the market, it is likely that their interests will intersect in several transfers. Marc Guéhi, who nearly joined Liverpool last September, has also been linked with Real Madrid, before Manchester City secured his signing last month. If Konaté leaves Liverpool and becomes a free agent, he will quickly become an attractive option for the Merengues. After a difficult start to the 2025-26 season, he is regaining his best form.
In addition, names like Nico Schlotterbeck and Castello Lukeba emerge as promising alternatives from the Bundesliga. Schlotterbeck, in particular, is in a favorable position with only one year remaining on his contract at the end of the season, while Lukeba, at 23 years old, still needs to prove himself compared to the more experienced vice-captain of Borussia Dortmund.
Joel Ordóñez, a 21-year-old defender from Independiente del Valle, is also a name to watch, although his transfer to a major club like Liverpool or Madrid would represent a significant leap in his career. Micky van de Ven, the talented 24-year-old center-back who has overcome injury issues, is another player to keep an eye on, especially with the current crisis at the Tottenham Hotspur, which may force many of their talents to seek new challenges.
As summer approaches, both Liverpool and Real Madrid will need to move quickly to strengthen their defenses now that the opportunity for Upamecano has closed. The pressure is on, and the future of both teams may depend on the decisions they make in this transfer window.
