Liverpool faces a devastating blow to its injury-stricken season, with the news that Wataru Endo, the versatile Japanese international, will be out for an extended period. The confirmation came from manager Arne Slot, who did not hide the seriousness of the situation following the Reds’ 1-0 victory over Sunderland. Endo, who had been playing as a right-back due to the injury crisis affecting that position, was forced to leave on a stretcher after an attempted tackle.

The club is experiencing a true nightmare with the absence of natural options like Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, both sidelined for some time. To make matters worse, Dominik Szoboszlai, an alternative solution, was suspended due to a controversial red card against Manchester City and was unable to assist the team at the Stadium of Light.

With the FA Cup clash against Brighton approaching, Slot revealed that Endo’s situation is concerning. “We still need to make some assessments, but it is clear and obvious that he will be out for a long time,” Slot said. “He is a good center-back and midfielder. In those areas, we are quite vulnerable, especially if something happens.” The uncertainty surrounding the exact nature of Endo’s injury also left Slot in doubt. “I’m not very sure [if it’s the ankle], it’s the foot, but whether it’s the ankle or the foot, we will have to evaluate tomorrow.”

The situation with Liverpool’s right-backs has been a true rollercoaster this season. While Slot can count on the return of Szoboszlai for the next match, he also has Curtis Jones as an option who has been playing in the right-back role. Joe Gomez, who has recovered from a groin injury, was back on the bench against Sunderland and could be the immediate solution in Endo’s position.

Managing players’ workload is a constant concern for Slot, who emphasized: “Load management is important because the last thing we need right now is another injury.” Slot acknowledged the challenge this poses for him and his medical team, stating that “the hardest decision is knowing what the best choice is at every moment.”

With pressure mounting and players being tested to their limits, Liverpool will have to find creative ways to navigate this crisis, while eyeing the possibility of a recovery in the FA Cup. What is at stake is not only continuity in the competition but also the physical integrity of their players at a critical moment in the season.
